ah, the garland fan world is a bit abuzz with purported news that hathaway has indeed been signed for a film AND STAGE (egad) adaptations of the not well loved (by most garland fans anyway) biography GET HAPPY. sigh. and the word appears to be that hathaway will do her own vocals. sigh. oh let's just hope people with a brain and some heart and some courage AND SOME TALENT have a lot to do with the scripting and directing and editing of what could be a big mess. don't get me wrong .. i kinda dig miss hathaway. but script is my concern (especially with this source material) and for god's sake some reasoned choices about vocals (a little? not at all? garland's voice off screen but hathaway doing rehearsals or just humming ... ) ... one of the great performance voices of the past century can't be just handed off to .. well. its going to be an entertaining project development observing phase, it 'tis.

i just report what i read .. i truly am more concerned about script and direction/editing than i am about hathaway ... or whoever ends up playing garland (given minimal standards of appropriateness of course) if this gets off the ground ... p.s. of course a big part of me just screams NOOO at the whole idea. but garland fans live always with people crafting ridiculous products on her back, based on her work, imagined from her life ... so this is just one more of those things in my mind.

Oh of course Martha. I don't think anyone could measure up to the Judy Davis movie. That was excellent, especially playing the 'older' Judy.
I definately won't see it either way. Same goes that I probably will never see the Aviator. Although I have the Soundtrack cause I like music of that period, I have no interest in the film, although if I had to choose someone to portray Kate it would be Cate Blanchet. I've seen a tiny bit and her acting is incredible.
I just can't see the tall lanky Hathaway portraying the tiny short Garland.. very strange to me.

Jess there is a whole thread, or a set of threads, on the topic of THE AVIATOR but for the life of me (and this predates my active involvement on this board) i can't seem to locate 'em ... but they're there, trust me jess . [by the by .. and we can continue this topic there once we find the threads .. i enjoyed that movie quite a bit .... ]

All I can say is if they're going to base it on GET HAPPY, then we may as well be watching a porno.
And then there's the issue of Voice Recordings vs. Anne's Singing.
I care less about this than I do the script, but DAMN. That's like choosing which limb I could live without. There are instances in movie history where both approaches have earned Oscars, but I have no idea how you film a movie about Judy and then not let the audience HEAR HER. They used recordings with the other great voice of the 20th century [Piaf's biopic] and things turned out just swell.
I'm strangely excited. Now there's one thing left to do: LET'S CAST IT, PEOPLE!
I personally think Mickey Rooney should be played by Gary Coleman.

Oh, and it seems I have lost track of THE AVIATOR thread, too. But definitely see it, Jess. It's a quality time!! TRUST ME.
(Aside from the fact that 50% of Kate's story was embellished or never actually happened. That doesn't matter to me as long as I'm allowed to see pretend!KateNSpence in swimsuits. I'm...shallow.)

I'm with ya, Martha. I enjoyed the Aviator quite a bit, too, and for reasons aside from the Kate portions.... (and I consider myself a Blanchett fan too). I love the music, cinematography, and portrayal of old Hollywood. OK, we need to find those threads!
I personally don't know enough about Judy Garland to make an intelligent comment here... But Anne Hathaway?! Blech... When will they ever learn enough to stop making remakes? Never, I guess. Its like how they want to remake My Fair Lady with Keira Knightley. I know the original wasn't good, but now they're going to make the same mistakes they made with the original. I wish they would just leave these alone.

WHOA hold back Amber... (just one more thing about the Aviator, I promise) pretend Kate and Spence in swimsuits!? WHY DIDN'T SOMEONE TELL ME THIS BEFORE? Okay, I'm renting this ASAP!
Back to Judy.. I haven't read Get Happy. Porno? Now I'm really confused....

'get happy' is full of prurient speculation about judy's sex life... 'tis all ... and that's enough for me (and clearly amber) to have labeled it trash. there's more to inform my opinion of the book .. but that's enough ...

As Martha clarified, that was just my way of saying that there's an abundance of sexytimes happening in Get Happy. Even my twelve-year-old self knew to take what I could out of the book and leave the rest of that stuff behind for the tabloids.
My childhood was completely corrupted by movie star biographies, btw.

Whoa.. kinda glad I never bought that Judy bio. I don't think I would have finished it if it was dribble like it sounds.. Amber, I totally watched the whole Aviator movie on YouTube and didn't see that scene you were talking about!! but just my luck, they don't have "part 6" on YouTube it seems.. and I'm guessing that is the only part I needed lol I watched 18 pr 19 parts of 10 minutes' of that film. It was pretty good. Very sad the mental unstable condition HH was in. I'll have to still rent it to see the ST KH scene dang!! Jess

I can help on a few.... the first one *looks* like Deanna Durbin, but I'm not entirely sure. I know I've seen that photo labeled before somewhere, but now I can't find it to tell for sure. I'll keep looking. The second one is Gloria de Haven. The third one is Mark Herron. And I'm totally blanking on the last two... *yells* Martha?! Where are you?! LOL! You're probably a lot more help than I am at this! LOL!
