HAHAHA, Amber, you cracked me up with your description of Katie! By the way, as long as I'm a pretty new fan of hers, I'm learning a lot mostly because to this forum, so thank you so much (everyone) for sharing news and trivias about her. And -you know, she could have smelled and whatever else- but I still LOOOOOOVE Kate! A lot! After all, what the heck, all those weaknesses make her human and not divine My feet are small, but hey: they smell, too! LOL.

Oh my dear, sweet Amber. All I can say it... ummm okkkkkayyyyyyyy. Oh, and sleep, please.
Innnteresting thought's about Katie's corner. I guess it's a form of flattery. I'd love for the actress to post a YouTube interview where a critic interviews her to see what she has to say about it. Perhaps there already is one?!
Thanks for your analytical approach as ever, to a simple question (laughs very much so, out loud)..
Jess

LMAO.
I'm not around for 24 hours and so you inflict your weirdness on these good people.
Sorry, folks. I'm taking her back to the nice place with the squishy walls now.
There, there chumbie. Come along, into the straitjacket. There's a good thing. ::pats::

Sofia---That's mah whole point! I was simply exploring an alternative answer to the woman's reclusiveness, that's all. I mean, is it simply beyond the realm of possibilty that that "IF SOMEONE WALKS UP TO ME ON THE STREET AND SAYS "HELLO" I WILL DIE!!!" mentality of her's was all a clever ruse to hide the fact that she stunk? Might it not just have been that everytime someone caught a whiff of her they dropped like a fly? Jess---Sleep is pretty much a lost cause on this one. I just see Kate in more than black and white, 'tis all. She's all human to me, which I guess only stems from years of utter devotion. I'm just growing out of my blind adulation phase, is what it is. Doesn't mean I love her any less---just that I'm in Stage 2 of 'Being a Katharine Hepburn Fan While Almost Losing Your Mind.' I also have a snarky streak which Kate has fallen victim to the most, unfortunately for her. I guess what it boils down to is that I'm a little sick of the "Goo-Goo Gaa-Gaa" part of the webernet that thinks she was a flawless individual. Not saying that this applies to the new peeps on the forum (far from it!), but just in general.
FarewellAmanda---Shup, you toadface! It's entirely your fault that that essay was penned in the first place! I'm throwing you overboard in July. Harumph. Moreover, in the last millisecond you just said, outloud, "Jammy would SO be the girl that would eat sugar cubes out of the tub."
Hiya, have we met, Pot? Name's Kettle.
I'll see you in the ambulance on the way to Lions View, chumbles.

Doesn't mean I love her any less---just that I'm in Stage 2 of 'Being a Katharine Hepburn Fan While Almost Losing Your Mind.' I must agree with you. Even though it's easier to picture Kate the way we see her in the movies, she was obviously more than this. I'm a new fan of Kate, but I'm kind of used to think about her human being as well as the actress, mostly because I am a fan of Julie Andrews since a long time, and I had to wait for a long time to get rid of her image of perfection I took from her movies. I mean, the fact -for instance- that she swears like a marine it's not a thing you can normally associate to Mary Poppins, lol.

Sofia, same boat here. Except I'm totally still in the Goo-Goo Gaa-Gaa Kate phase. Like you and Julie, it's the same with me and Barbra Streisand. She's totally a normal, braless (yes, as in a non bra wearin' folk.. I don't want to talk about it) Brooklyn girl to me now. But Phase 1 of Kate adoration is still well in tact with this Sydney chick! It's gonna be wierd to move to phase 2.. anyone know what phase 3 is? Total mind loss? Will I turn in to Amber? What is to be of me!? Amber, as always I love your posts. I'm still in phase 1 of those too... Jess

My dear, darling, sweet Jess. Are you implying that my mind has been lost somewhere in the Belgian Congo? Oh, no no no---the mere notion of this is just too silly for me to even entertain!
I think Stage 3 is somewhere in the middle of moi and, say, Judy. Or, Dreamer. Or, Martha. Ya know, the nice ladies on here that for some inexplicable reason tolerate me.
(You can be rest assured it takes years of whatchamacallit to get to the level of crazy I've reached.)
So, uh, how's that latest youtube video you've seen recently? D'ja see the one about those funny cats? HILARIOUS!

Phase I: You are 13 and she is 60 and you see her in a movie and you are mesmerized. Hijacked. Kidnapped. You develop an almost instantaneous girl crush (as the NY Times so aptly labeled the kind of adoration a young girl can have for an older, accomplished woman that frequently has nothing to do with sexual orientation) and you are compelled to find out everything there is to know about her.
Phase II: You are 22 and you get to meet her - and you are speechless. Mesmerized. Hijacked. Kidnapped. And you make it known to all your friends that if they receive a ransom note from her, they are to tear it up because you ain't goin' nowhere soon. And by this time you have seen her onstage and have sought and found all her films in movie houses, even the final one on your list - the elusive Iron Petticoat - at MoMA - and, boy, was that curiosity ever worth the wait.
Phase III: You are 32 and you are beginning to think that she has some pretty goofball ideas and because she expresses them unabashedly from the throne in her living room with a goose hanging over her head, you wonder if she's not a tad loopy. Did she really just say that? Huh? Still mesmerized, only now you figure you don't have to agree with every word that comes out of her mouth.
Phase IV: You are 40 and you are getting older and are realizing that much of that goofy stuff she utters is actually quite sound and sage advice. Makes perfect sense. And now you really UNDERSTAND that she was a pretty wise soul about many things in life.
Phase V: You are 49 and she dies and since you've had an abiding affection for that noise for 36 years, you miss it terribly when it's gone...."where's that noise?" And you watch and re-watch her movies. And you talk about her all the time and think about her a lot. And you read what her friends had to say about her over and over again. And you grasp how smart you were for realizing at 13 what a remarkable, tough, sensitive, smart, talented, funny, thoroughly original human being she was. And you continue to be mesmerized. Hijacked. Kidnapped for life.

I'll have you know Katie and I are alternatively crying and cracking up and crying again and----oh, now the moment has passed. But for a few minutes we had some legitimate emotions going on there.
In our collective relationship [Is that what you would call it? It's the best word I've got at the moment.] with Kate we're in Phase III and V simultaneously.
Now didn't that just make us feel like crudmuffins? We miss her.

The many phases of Kate fandom -- great post, Judy! Definite pattern which we've discussed many times. You find her as a young woman and somehow your kid brain recognizes that a woman of substance resides in the wonderful performer who makes you laugh, cry, and wish you knew on a personal level. Kate was my touchstone whenever I made a career or life choice. I looked at the way that she led her life and it gave me the impetus to adopt a lot of her views for my own. It's been 50 years since I found her and she's still the woman who provides me with a design for living. I just hope I can age as gracefully publicly and privately as she did. Sherry
