Can we just take a moment to discuss Pixar's latest animated feature film, 'Up'? It's essentially the story of Kate and Spencer.... ....based loosely on 'The Great Balloon Adventure'. THE SIMILARITIES CANNOT BE DENIED! 'Olly Olly Oxen Free' (1978)
'Olly Olly Spencer Free' (2009) [Behold: Matt Drayton! Battling miscegenation laws and exploring new land all within the comforts of his hot air house!]
Which leaves me to believe that some winner over at Disney watched the '78 version of this story and thought to himself: "Hmm. You know what would have made this movie better? If Spencer Tracy were in it instead. Tracy, AND TALKING DOGS. Hell, we've given the power of speech to racing cars already, so this shouldn't be a stretch. Note to Self: Finish 75 page treatment to shoot off to the execs by next weekend."
And they thought nobody would've noticed.
[Note: I have not yet seen this film, and have been withholding from writing an actual review/blog about it until I have done so, but what the hell. I'll be sitting in a theatre with Katie in less than 12 days (!!!!!!!!!!!!), so review(s) coming then. If we're not doing other things, that is, such as crashing a pontoon into a stray log. Or serving geriatrics lem'nade and "shortnin' bread" while screening 'Rose Marie'. Ya know, the normal stuff every 20 and 22-year-old does with their time.]

Well, yes, the similarities of Carl and Ellie to Kate and Spence are unavoidable -- when Carl meets Ellie as a little kid -- they both just happen to be little redhaired kids. And she just happens to be a tomboy kinda girl with wild red hair and a huge imagination who takes him along for the "ride" in her "clubhouse" that she pretends to be flying.
There are numerous frames in the film involving Ellie and Carl that will immediately have any Kate and Spencer fan saying ... I've seen this scene before in a Tracy-Hepburn film or I've read about Kate and Spencer doing this. Watch for the fedora on Carl in one scene -- eventually he wears a different hat BUT in one scene, it's the ST signature fedora.
Also -- if ST were alive, he'd have been the "voice" of Carl because although Ed Asner is saying the lines, if you listen closely, you can "hear" Spencer Tracy saying those lines.
I don't want to say too much about the film because it is so VERY good and you need to see it to appreciate the beauty of the story. It will make you laugh and it will break your heart and it will leave you feeling better for having seen it. I think Kate and Spencer would both have enjoyed this film and seen it as a compliment. I'll be seeing this as soon as it hits Aussie screens! I've only heard about the picture but having seen that cover art.. that's a dead ringer for Spencer, Pixar style! How could no one 'notice' just that in itself?!
I'm kinda looking forward to it! And that's coming from someone that hasn't seen a 'cartoon' since real cartoons were in the cinema (i.e. drawn ones.. Disney style)!
