I was just watching Parkinson (a celebrity interviewer over here) who was interviewing Peter O'Toole. He was pretty funny and Parky asked him about Kate. He said she was a joy to work with and called her a 'gorgeous bird'. He told a really funny story of the first time they met - he was doing a play in London, where there were no toilets back stage and he was taking a pee in the sink when he heard 'hello, I'm Kate Hepburn' (he did her voice - it was very funny) and he pretended he was washing his hands in the sink! Robbie Williams, who had been interviewed before him also piped up. Peter O'Toole said that she was one of the few people who had ever overpowered him (I don't think this was the exact word he used, but it was something to this effect). Then Robbie said 'did you then?' No answer. O'Toole had been smiling for most of the interview, especially when they started talking about Kate. He's still smiling and just looking at Robbie. I'm not sure if he knew what Robbie was talking about at first. Robbie elaborates: 'did you seal the deal?' Parky (jokingly) makes a derogatory comment about the youth of today and then adds, 'did you then?' Everyone's laughing, O'Toole doesn't answer and Robbie's looking pretty awkward, knowing he put his foot in it. But it's pretty funny. On that note they have to wrap it up. He spoke very highly and affectionately about her though.

And having just recently watched THE LION IN WINTER again am currently blown away again by the chemistry they had together. It was always nice to know that that chemistry continued offstage and that they became friends. I'd known that story about her coming backstage but it's fun that he's still telling it cause it's a funny story. Amazing isn't it how great movies get made. She maked SUMMERTIME with David Lean. They become friends. He's looking for someone to star in LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and she tells him to go see this kid O'Toole.... He's also said that he never enjoyed working with anyone more, even Burton! High praise from a great actor. And SHE just lit up on the Cavett show when he asked her about working with O'Toole - "We just got on great" is what she said among other things. And it shows on the screen. Plain as day. Of course, in line with your story and that leading question from Robbie, is the other great line from O'Toole about Kate was made after they'd done LION. He was quoted as saying something like: "If I'd have known her twenty years ago I would have broken Tracy's fingers to get her." Great quote that wastes no time saying what he felt. Of course, in Sian Philliips autobiography, she quotes the line and says that neither she (who was married to him at the time) nor Kate knew how to take it. She cause, well, they were married. And Kate cause - LOL - it implied that she wasn't enticing enough for him to want her then (in '68)!! Still a great quote from Pig about Nags. And still a great, great movie. Judy
