i'm moving from Chicago to Philadelphia this spring ... I may be involved as a faculty/supporter kind of person. At any rate .. this seems like a cool opportunity ...
HEADLONG PERFORMANCE INSTITUTE (HPI) is a fall semester hybrid
performance training program in the heart of Philadelphia focused on
training the next generation of performer/creators. HPI offers an
intensive 14-week program equivalent to 4 full academic course
credits, which are granted through Bryn Mawr College. HPI welcomes
applications from current undergraduates, and recent college
graduates. HPI faculty members are working artists and master
teachers, and include artistic directors from Headlong Dance Theater
and Pig Iron Theatre Company, as well as other leaders in
Philadelphia’s vibrant and internationally known dance, theater, and
physical theater community. Check out www.headlongperformanceinstitute.org
for a full list of the faculty and a fuller description of the
program.
At HPI, student artists train, create, and perform. A typical day
includes two technique classes (movement, voice, mask, etc.),
improvisation/composition work, and time for rehearsal on student
projects. Training focuses on introductions to three physical
performance techniques: Responsive Movement (a contemporary dance
approach with particular focus on Structured and Contact Improvisation
and Releasing Techniques), Lecoq clown, and dell’Arte mask.
Contemporary approaches to composition and improvisation structure
constant creation by our student artists. Their work is also grounded
in a study of the dramaturgies of contemporary performance, and is
informed by frequent trips to see live performances in Philadelphia
and beyond.
This past fall, HPI was host to students from Bryn Mawr, Haverford,
Bennington, Smith, Denison, Temple, and many other colleges and
universities.
HPI is still accepting applications for the coming fall. Take a look. www.headlongperformanceinstitute.org/apply_now.html
