I'm extremely heartbroken because I have just started watching several of June's films recently, and becoming a big fan. I was even happy to have the thought that she was still alive--walking around someplace, growing old gracefully. I don't know how many of you were actual fans, but I thought I'd mention it. www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2006/07/10/state/n142713D46.DTL

I was watching Murder My Sweet over the weekend and wondered to myself about June Allyson and her happy marriage to Powell till he died. I just started to think about her and the fact that she'd not been heard from recently. And now I read this. I actualy liked her a great deal. Cannot imagine her at 88. She was always so girlish. Which of her films have you been watching.

Which of her films have you been watching. A few days ago I watched The Stratton Story with Jimmy Stewart, which I thought was GREAT. I also saw The Girl in White and she was very good in that. And some of her scenes in Little Women. June, obviously, was fresh on my mind, and for some reason I had this feeling she was going to be around a little while longer, you know. In honor of her passing I think I'm going to rent some of her films I have not seen yet.

Hi Richard, In regard to June Allyson - I suggest either renting (if available) or catching on TCM: Good News (great musical), Her Highness and the Bellboy (cute film), Girl Crazy (June has a small role billed as Specialty Singer) but this is a wonderful Judy Garland/Mickey Rooney film with a great score, and Best Foot Forward ( again June has a small part but it's a fun film and Lucille Ball is terrific and gorgeous to look at). Also periodically, TCM repeats "Private Screenings" in which Robert Osborne interviews actors or directors -- less than a year ago, I saw the June Allyson one made in 1998 and it was quite good and she looked very much as she did as a younger woman. Believe it or not, I met June Allyson in 1998. It was a total accident. I was on a cruise to South America and she was a guest lecturer on board. I had just gotten on the ship and was walking down a corridor when I saw two women approaching and one looked MIGHTY familiar. When I got closer I absolutely knew it was June Allyson. Moment of decision -- do I make believe I didn't see her so as not to disturb her or do I chance a "Hello"? She looked at me and smiled so I decided that was the "OK -- you can recognize me" signal so I stopped and greeted her and told her that I'd enjoyed her film work and was looking forward to hearing her lecture during the cruise. She was very nice and thanked me and she looked like --- JUNE ALLYSON of the MGM films. At that point she was 80 and she looked terrific -- same hair and that inimitable voice. I went to her lecture which was very nice as she was personable and outgoing. So -- watch her films and enjoy her work. I will admit, I've never seen her in Little Women cause there is only one Jo March and that is Kate Hepburn.

I will definitely be on the lookout for any of Allyson's films that air in the future on TCM.

I think I was pretty biased when it came to that version of Little Women. If a film has June Allyson, Janet Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor, and that cute O'Brien girl, how can you possibly go wrong? I blame it on my age, you know. I'm a sucker for pretty girls and I thought that movie had a very decent cast.

I'll admit to being biased to the Winona Ryder version of Little Women, which came out when I was a kid. It was my first exposure to the story and has always been one of my favorite movies. It's just a generational bias.

I'm not a huge fan of June Allyson; I've only seen her in Little Women and I didn't care for that, but I still have respect for her. It's sad to see the classic actors slowly dwindling down in numbers.

This Sunday, 7/16 TCM is showing 6 June Allyson films including Little Women, Best Foot Forward, and Good News -- three of her best movies. They're also showing the Private Screenings interview that she did with Robert Osborne in 1998. Hope you get to see some or all of this tribute day to her. Also there are full details on her website: www.juneallyson.comSherry

I've got all those films tagged and ready to record. Thanks Sherry, I don't know what I'd do without you.
