This is random but I found this video of Kate Mulgrew playing Kate Hepburn. The quality of the video is horrible but I'm posting it because I was amazed at how much she sounds like the real Kate! Why didn't they have her play Kate in The Aviator? ;D video.wtnh.com/news/2002/jan/clips/01302002-kate.ram

Whoa, for a minute there I couldn't tell if I was listening to Hepburn or Mulgrew. Because the video quality is so bad, I thought that it was a voiceover of Katharine or something. I've not yet seen The Aviator; who do you think does the better Hepburn?

Saw Mulgrew play Kate in "Tea at Five" on two separate occasions. Basically Mulgrew captured the essence of Kate with the clothes she wore and by adopting Kate's posture, manner of walking, attitude, etc. Vocally she is OK as Kate but not great. At the start of the second act when she came on stage as the 70-plus Kate, the impression was rather stunning because the wigmaker had absolutely captured Kate's hairstyle and Mulgrew carried it off well because she has a facial structure similar to Kate's. BUT -- Mulgrew used a series of facial grimaces and muggings that are not only annoying but also ridiculous and they detracted from the physical impression that she was trying to create. The second time I saw her play the role -- three months had elapsed -- she had toned down the grimacing and mugging in the second act -- but not enough.
The play itself has many dishonest moments not based in fact but in conjecture or fantasy. The playwright has attempted to chalk some of it up to "dramatic license". Well, dramatic license does not give one the freedom to inject false information into a play ostensibly about the facts of someone's life.
As to why Mulgrew wasn't asked to play Kate in "The Aviator" -- the answer is: she isn't a film star and Cate Blanchett is. It's all about star power. Frankly, because of her physical resemblance to Kate, I think Mulgrew in the hands of Martin Scorsese would have made a better "Kate" in The Aviator than Blanchett.

From the clip I saw, I think Kate Mulgrew would be more convincing as Kate Hepburn. Watching Cate Blanchett in The Aviator just annoyed me because it was more like she was doing an imitation... if that makes sense. It was over-acted. And like Sherry said, in the hands of Scorsese, she would have been better. Make-up can do wonders and since Mulgrew already resembles Kate (whereas Cate does not), it wouldn't be too difficult.
