Thanks Sherry - agree. That with masculine with a big capital M is what I meant by only seeing Lancaster as Starbuck. What I meant by overplaying/annoying - the character was supposed to be played big and broad (my language grrrr) otherwise we wouldn't have noticed his vulnerability. Which might be the reason people don't get the film. The two so different personalities in one, can be hard to see, even though it not that unusual even the neighbor next door may be so. Hi hi - someone who didn't like Bing as Dexter - I suddenly don't fell alone with my opinion - thanks.

hmm.... this pic is very unlike Kate pictures isn't it - never seen it before I checked this thread I ... uhm ... like this movie although its not one I often watched - as some of you have pointed out - Lancaster is annoying - he TOTALLY overacts (kinda like in Elmer Gantry) ... and he gets on my nerves with it. I never cared for Lancaster in anything else - except maybe in FROM HERE TO ETERNETY he was bareable (although the movie itself - oh well .. different subject). I like Kate in the role though ... don't know why ..probably cause she is Kate still .. interesting picture...

But that he was supposed to. That way you better realize how vulnable he was - he wasn't that tuff Starbuck as you see at first sight and so he is in Elmery Grant as well.
Try watch him in Appace, The Crimson Pirate or A Child is Waiting with Judy Garland - totally different roles - he is wonderful. The last one I haven't seen for years - haven't been able to forget the film though ;-) Even loved him in From Here to Eternity but it was Monty with his trumpet who made me weep or in The Gypsy Moths with Deborah Kerr.

HEEYYY - I remember THE GYPSY MOTHS ... he was okay there too .... I guess he was supposed to overact in RAINMAKER and EG you are right - but he still gets on my nerves with it!! I've always wanted to watch A CHILD IS WAITING - never caught it anywhere

I've only seen RAINMAKER one once and it's been a while, but the scene I remember most is Lily Ann Beasly. I rewound that multiple times! It's a hoot and a half.

Ouch I loved High Society and still think it was a great film, no musical. HOWEVER (let me finish haha) I do think it should be considered as a completely seperate film to Philly Story. In my opinion they are nothing alike and should never be compared. Of course it was worse than The Philly Story (one of the best movies ever made) but how can it possibly compare?! IMO they should have changed all the character names and left it as a similar story. I try to not even think of it as a remake but a completely seperate movie in which the entire cast provided shining performances. I'm not a Grace Kelly fan by any means but she was perfectly cast in High Society as were the two male leads. I guess you've gotta have an appreciation for the musicals. They're what I started out watching and if I had never seen High Socirty (because it was a musical and I would only watch 'classics' if they were musical classicas as a teenager), I would have never known about The Philadelphia Story in which I purchased to see what the difference was and fell in LURRVEE with Ms Kate. So I'll just wipe my tear away and bow out with my head down lol Now that's off my chest, I haven't seen The Rainmaker but looking at those stunning pictures dreamer provided I'm going to have to track it down!! Kate with her hair OUT! I've gotta get it just to see that! Ow I hate over acting, I bet I'll hardly be able to watch it. At least I'm forewarned.. Jess

This movie is going to air in a few days and I'm really excited. By looking at the pictures it seems like a very 'loose' role for Kate. Its seems after 1950 she rarely wore her hair down. Most of her roles were very proper. In Summertime she/Jane seemed very self conscious when her hair was down in a ponytail. This looks very relaxed. Thanks for posting these pics.

I finally watched this. I must agree with most of you, Burt was not very good. I really wanted to duct tape his arms down. I kept expecting everyone to burst into song. Another thing, there was so much yelling in the movie. Everyone yelling at everyone else very annyoing. I didn't think the film was bad but it wasn't great. I liked the barn scene, Kate's performance was very endearing.
