Catharine
Laura came from a very wealthy and distinguished family and her family has a great web site - until recently they had some baby pictures of Laura and childhood pictures as well . I will see if I can dig the web site up .

I dont' have the GWCTD ladder shot scanned. Thought I did...Will have to look into that and send to you so you can share it with everyone....
And I see that you located the LITTLE WOMEN one.... That's great.
Thanks! Judy

Yes, thanks everyone for reminding me of all these lovely Kate photos. I'm having trouble selecting an avator though - seems my computer doesn't like the new board update (it took me ages to reactivate my account). Of course with so many wonderful pics to choose from, both on katethegreat and from other sources, it's far too difficult to choose a favourite. She just looked so good, no matter what her age!

And talking of age, I like the 1991 photo of her in Vogue, sitting cross-legged in her favourite latterday white, red & black outfit complete with loose trouser hem and trainers. Her head's thrown back with a wide open smile - just hope I look that good at 84!

One of my favourite photographs is the one which was reproduced in colour in the Southeby's catalogue . Its on the back of the hardback edition of Me .
Its of Katharine and Spencer sitting together and they are looking at each other very intently and Spencer sort of has his arm around Katharine - you can clearly see Katharine's red hair and they both look very happy .

Is it true that Spencer Tracy and Laura Harding just tolerated each other? Or is that another Porterism? Another of my favorites: And another... contrasting favorite:

Anne Edwards said that. It hasn't been verified but I have a hunch that it is true . But apparently he had friends that she didn't like - they both worked it out

Could it be jealousy? Perhaps only on Laura's side. He took the spotlight in Katharine's life... and she was sort of pushed to the side. Kind of like a high school friendship where your best friend suddenly gets a boyfriend/girlfriend and she/he is never there to hang out anymore Maybe that's a naive assumption. Or maybe... Laura thought that Spencer wasn't good enough for Kate since he was an alcoholic and seemingly disrespectful to her in public and Spencer only tolerated Laura because she was Kate's friend. Maybe she was too hoity toity for him. Is that how you spell hoity toity? .... I don't think I've ever used that phrase before. Anyway, I'm sure Smith has the answer. Catherine

Laura and Katharine were always friends but she wasn't at the centre of Katharine's life when she met Spencer . Apparently most people didn't appreciate Laura - I suspect that Spencer didn't like people who he thought were putting on airs or were too rich - that's a guess .
In the Higham biography Laura was quoted as saying that she really didn't approve of Katharine's bohemian lifestyle whatever that means - maybe she didn't approve of Katharine's affairs - I really don't know .

Bohemian as in not conforming to the mainstream lifestyles of Hollywood actors, I would guess. Living life simply and modestly. Maybe she didn't shave her legs.

I really don't know for sure what the issue was but I think that she probably disapproved of Katharine's private life - that's a guess .
When Katharine was living with Leland she was also sharing the house with Laura . My impression of Laura was that she was a rather respectable person and people in those times usually didn't live with people that they weren't married to, especially when they were married to someone else . By the way Laura actually knew Leland from way back and apparently they got on OK

That is a rather odd living situation, even now. Most people don't have a roommate AND a live-in boyfriend. Someone's going to have a problem with it. But it seems as though Laura was attached. She was wealthy and apparently didn't have any interests of her own to keep her occupied so she clung to Katharine. Of course, Katharine probably enjoyed the attention but I'm sure their relationship was a lot more than just Kate soaking up the envy of another -- if Laura even envied her. Maybe she wanted to mold her... lol I'm rambling.

Apparently when Leland moved in Katharine rented a bigger house .
One of the issues that concerns me about Laura is that she was not a public person and everything we hear about her is usually from other people 's viewpoint . However she did give a couple of interviews and when you hear her voice a different person emerges . If you get a chance to ever read the Higham book read it because he interviewed Laura . Also the 1992 video has a lot of footage of Laura . My understanding is that she didn't want to live her life in Katharine's shadow and that's why she went back to east in about 1935 . Sounds perfectly reasonable to me .
