I am THRILLED we will finally meet! i'm attending the 2pm performance (fitting it in between "Summer of Judy" screenings at the Walter Reade and the Paley Center). This makes the adventure so much, well, MORE. Yea.

I'm going to the evening perf.....Is this some sort of conspiracy to keep us from meeting? Oh, well. There'll come a day....JS

aha, judy .. we'll make it work! one day we will meet.
perhaps we can meet up and discuss this play in person ... ahem .. i appreciated ms. houghton's performance very much. actually all of the performances were fine ... the play itself, a draft / precursor / early version of what was to become THE GLASS MENAGERIE is more interesting, for my money, as an exercise in what doesn't work with this story and/or what is lost and gained with the different changes Williams made to the play and the details presented in the final drama with comic moments that he finally created ..
this piece is of dramaturgical interest -- comparing and contrasting and asking what if and what works and ... almost always coming down on the side of: the 'glass menagerie' we know is quite a wonder.
we all go through drafts. williams constantly rewrote even after his plays were produced. an intriguing exercise i was glad to see. i could see this particular piece (and this is the premiere performance, right judy?) might best be presented as a special event during a conventional run of 'the glass menagerie' at some point ... with discussions and presentations and such things ...
so for me (and i'll be attempting to create a review at some point soon) ... this was more an intellectual exercise than a theatrical experience purely. and lovely to see houghton on stage.
[plot-ish details: the story in this version is one act .. we stay with the family only during the dinner party ... Amanda and son Tom and daughter Laura and the Gentleman Caller all still present. its more a comedy than a tragedy ... Laura isn't handicapped but just shy .. Laura and the visitor go off for a walk after dinner ... the character of son Tom kinda fades away. a thin domestic drama in a way .. and all the plot details we know ... Laura leaving her secretarial course and the phone calls to sell magazine subscriptions .. are simply reported rather than shown. this is more a sitcom version of the "date" part of the play, with a happy ending.
intriguing.
