I'm just curious, for you who've seen the Aviator, what did you think of Cate Blanchett's portayal of Katharine Hepburn? Any other thoughts about the movie?

I agree with Smith. I was pleasantly surprised by Cate's performance, even though she only occasionally looked like KH and didn't always get the accent right. Nontheless, there was definitely something Katelike about her!
There were plenty of historical inaccuracies, but I think we have to accept that somewhat in entertainment movies - I don't think it made any claims to be an instructive documentary! Besides, it wasn't a Katharine Hepburn biopic.....
I have to add that I was equally impressed - and even more surprised - by Leonardo de Caprio's very capable performance.

I haven't seen the Aviator and do not plan to. The only thing that peaks my interest in it is the character of Katharine Hepburn. I've heard Cate Blanchett gives a believable performance but there are some inaccuracies in the movie. What are some of the innacuracies?

I'm so glad you liked it. I was begining to thinkI'm the only freaky who liked Blanchett performance. I don't think the inaccurances were so important. They are representative enough showing Katharine's feelings about Hughes and Tracy. Well I think she meant that in ME. With Hughes "It was good while it went on". But Tracy was her match.

Even if I think the movie itself was bad, I LOVED Cate Blanchett's performance of Katharine Hepburn. Before I watched it I was very suspicious, I mean, can any act the amazing Katharine? but I must say I was mighty impressed of her acting. The way she spoke and moved...wow! After this Cate Blanchett have become much better in my eyes at least. I can't understand why they made a movie about Howard Hughes instead of Katharine Hepburn tho...Can't they see that Katharine is the intersting one? I have another question about The Aviator. What do you think Katharine Hepburn would think of the movie? I've heard somewhere that they waited to do the movie, 'cuz they were unsure of how Katharine would think about it. So, do you think she disliked that she was portrayed in a movie like that? Since she wasn't that happy about letting ppl to close...

My main issue with The Aviator was the way it portrayed Katharine's family . They were comfortable because they worked hard . Katharine's father was born into an impoverished family and Kit Hepburn was an orphan with very little money . Hughes inherited his wealth from his father .
The other thing was that they portrayed Katharine as breaking up with Howard as if they parted badly . In reality Katharine remained good friends with Howard .
However Cate Blanchett gives a wonderful performance despite the historical inaccuracies . The film is fiction

I just saw The Aviator a couple nights ago... The movie was great, very well-directed. Leo did an amazing job and so did Cate but I just couldn't get over the fact that she looked nothing like Kate Hepburn nor did she really sound like her. Most of the time the accent was right... but it was too distracting for me to even imagine it being Kate. Maybe I should have used my imagination a little more In the special features, the make-up artists were talking about how they didn't want to actually mimic every little detail of the actors just because it's practically impossible. But... for someone who watches Katharine Hepburn all the time it was a little hard to fathom Cate Blanchett as Katharine Hepburn. I also think she over-acted at times, possibly trying to immitate her from Bringing Up Baby a little too much... or something. Anyway, the movie was still fascinating. I'm going to read a more about Howard Hughes now! Oh, and is it just me or did they make the Hepburns a little nuttier/annoying than they really were? Frances Conroy looked nothing like Kit and I'm assuming she wasn't quite as feeble-sounding. Can't please everyone... but at least please the Kate fans! Catherine PS Did anyone else notice that Rufus Wainwright (and the rest of the Wainwright family) was in that movie (during the party scenes)? Another thing I liked about the movie was the music they played.

I' ve just watched The aviator again, and I'd like to know if the scene with Hughes buying the Hepburn & Tracy pictures is factual or not. I never heard anything about it. Mariluna

Its entirely fictional . I have only seen one private picture of them together and there's also the footage of them filming each other in the 1992 documentary .
Once Spencer was interviewed by a reporter in a motel room - the reporter noticed that Spencer kept looking towards the back of the motel, he said why are you doing that, Spencer said, Katie always comes in the back - go to be discreet you know .

Perhaps you have only seen one private picture of them together because Howard Hughes purchased them.... That is probably something we will never know. It is rather strange that we have never seen a private picture of Spence and Kate...

Hi
The creators of the film said the scene was fiction . The reason we don't get to see any private pictures is that Kath and Spencer were scrupulous about making sure they never appeared in public together - and this was particularly true in America . I have one account from someone who said they once served them breakfast in bed when they were together in Europe - I have no idea whether this account is true but they did travel a fair bit and they probably were a bit more relaxed when they were overseas .
By the time Katharine met Spencer in 1941 the relationship with Howard was over .
