but ... BUB was messed with (in its own very 70s way) ... *what's up doc* ...
but are you both saying that you're finding the promos for the new 'the women' ... um .. lame? misguided? i'm trying to remember where i saw a spot for the new movie recently ... shots of annette benning in the roz russell role (i'm guessing .. .whatever the new script calls her) piqued my interest. meg ryan doing her pouty mouth "what? who? ME?" look puts me to sleep however. i'm guessing she's playing the mary role .. arg.
reports of remakes of this movie have been regular announcements for decades, with evolving sets of intriguing 'women of the moment' announced in the various roles. i would love to read the backstory about the movie rights to the story since the 1930s version, and who has owned them since then (for these announced-but-never-appearing-until-now-remakes over the years) ... and challenges that have been encountered along the way. i wonder about the scripts that have been generated .. .i wonder .. but i guess, that's the dramaturg in me. intrigued in these versions.

I'm not ashamed of my love for What's Up Doc? Quality movie, that. It's not a word-for-word remake, Alyssa dear. More like beautiful Bogdanovich homage.
But The Women?!
Oh, Meg Ryan. I can't watch you up there on that 40 ft screen anymore without wondering why you did that to your face.
....the thing is, as much as I adore and respect some of the actors cast in the remake, it boils down to the fact that it's a BLOODY REMAKE OF THE WOMEN.
I'm not against remakes entirely. If it was a B picture from Monogram that they were facilitating CPR on, then I'd say have at it, studio execs... but THE WOMEN? Adrian? George Cukor? ShearerCrawfordRussellGoddardFontaineBolandMainWeidler? MGM? Jungle Red? Need I go on?!
I feel as if I'm conveying myself as one bonafide stuck-up, but an occurance like this reminds me that the proverbial well is running dry in Hollywood.
[BUT, OH SURE, THEY PULLED X-F2'S PLUG AFTER 3 WEEKS? Unfair and brutal critics, awkward promotion and a senseless summer slot killed my little movie that could. Snivel. Yes, I'm bitter.]
Edit: Second tv spot is now airing. The words 'jungle red' just spewed from Meg Ryan's mouth and hypothetical up-chuck has now spewed from mine.

GAH the trailer looks so bad and Meg Ryan's face is horrible. I want to see it just to see how bad it's going to be. I know I'm gonna hate it.
If they ever remade The Philadelphia Story in modern day I would SHOOT SOMEONE.

When I first heard this movie was being made I was like ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! It looks like a piece. I mean what the hell? The first one was awesome no one can touch it. And:
Joan Crawford>Eva Mendes
Norma Shearer>Meg Ryan.
UGH. And I am very happy I haven't seen Meg Ryan say Jungle Red, oh god I might throw my tv out the window if I do!

I mean wtf Eva Mendes??? I'm not being racist or anything but she is hispanic, far from Joan Crawford. I mean it's not that I don't like her it's just I can't picture her playing Joan Crawford's role! And Meg Ryan in Norma Shearer's role, and with her face?? Umm...no. I bet it's going to get bad reviews from the critics.

This movie is AMAZING!! I watched it for the first time last friday (I know, I know...) and simply LOVED it. Rosalind Russell was so friggin' hilarious, omg, she was my favourite part. And Joan, loved her in it too, even though she played a btch lol
It's such a classic, perfect just the way it was... I'm not happy at all about this! And what a poor choice of actresses! Meg Ryan is so boring... I can't stand her (if you're a fan, sorry). And although I like Annette, I can't see her playing Sylvia! Sylvia is Roz!! Eva Mendes? W-T-F?
Just watched the trailer and I know I'll hate it.
CLASSICS SHOULD BE LEFT ALONE!

i suppose we should just re title this thread "the women: the remake" or summin ... cause who is really this angry any more?? this remake just IS. but to share .. in today's New York Times .... a grid comparing the 1939 (really? 1939 .. lessee .. what *other* great american movie was released that year .. humm "i could while away the hours conferring with the flowers ... ") ... where was i .. comparing the 1939 version of the women to this 2008 version www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2008/08/29/arts/29women.ready.htmlAND a lil article about the adventure. www.nytimes.com/2008/08/31/movies/31gate.html?ei=5070&emc=eta1

So, folks, I've accepted the fact that I must coexist with this remake if I am ever to preserve what little sanity is left in my brain. This is not to say that I will ever have it over for dinner or even spend a day shopping with it. It just..... well, IS, as Martha put it.
So, my query: Dare I read that?
Also, I'm a gofugyourself.com loyalist and a snippt from their blog:
"I was talking to my friend Grant yesterday about this remake of The Women Eva Mendes is in, and how I am really not very interested in it, in part because the casting makes me feel like I just tripped and fell into 1995 (Eva Mendes aside, actually), but also because the sentence, "Eva Mendes takes over the Joan Crawford role" makes my blood run ice cold, and surely makes Joan Crawford's ice cold blood run hot as she attempts to claw out of her grave to go smack Eva Mendes around. The more I think about it, the more I kind of don't get Eva Mendes in general."
My thoughts exactly, Jessica. My thoughts exactly.... [except for the fact that I think Joan is grossly misunderstood in our culture thanks to that ingrate daughter of her's and thusly, the characterization of Joan having ice cold blood naturally makes MY ice cold blood run HOT.]
