Just finished Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov. I've read it about 4 times and it's one of my all-time favourites. So beautifully written!
"Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta."

It's pretty good. I believe it was a made for TV movie. I like them both equally. The old one is really good, I like James Mason in it. The new one is more scandalous and a little more R rated I would think...lol. I wanted to read the book sometime. I had gotten it from the library once but never was able to actually read it because I was so busy.

Along with Atonement (Ian McEwan - so much better than the film!!), Lolita is one of my all-time favs, so I'm obviously biased, but I think you guys should read it! I know the subject is really juicy and not for everyone, but it's soooo beautifully written... the words are like music! And the films are good (as much as I love Kubrick, I liked the new version better!) but not as half as the book! It's fascinating...
"She was Lo, plain Lo, in the morning, standing four feet ten in one sock. She was Lola in slacks. She was Dolly at school. She was Dolores on the dotted line. But in my arms, she was always Lolita."

@ Alyssa: you mean the book or the film?
And I don't understand that comment either. I don't see any resemblance, and Keira is quite annoying, imho (sorry if you like her!)

I lilke the movie and the book. I kinda like her. shes too skinny though. I dont think she resembled her.. but she reminded me of her with the cap and bathing suit on the diving board. thats about it.

Yep, the film was beautiful. And Keira wasn't as annoying as usual. The music in it was fan-tas-tic. And the Vanessa Redgrave bit!! Amazing. Love her to pieces.

KILGALLEN .. a bio of dorothy kilgallen by lee israel.
i was newly reminded of lee israel (the women elaine stritch describes as "a hell of a writer" in her one woman show ON LIBERTY) with her new book about her 'career' as a forger -- CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME? MEMOIRS OF A LITERARY FORGER [she is a marvelous writer and no, i can't quite forgive her] .. kilgallen will be familiar to folks who watch the old reruns of 'what's my line' ... she is fairly humorless but had quite a journalistic career. who knew?

Starring Miss Barbara Stanwyck owns. It's the first thing I grab in a fire. Have I mentioned I got it on ebay for only $15.50??? Yup. I'll live on that story for a few more years. There's one for sale now and starting bid is $99. Suckers.
