I couldn't find the thread where Sherry posted the cover of the Now Playing guide with Kate on the cover. Unfortunately she did not make the cover this month. Brando did. www.tcm.com/nowplaying/index/?cid=172068From the tiny print in the picture it looks like there is a Kate article though. Can someone scan it?

Thanks for that clip Shaun. I remember reading about that night and about her kind words to Holden after his death. I'm happy I finally got a chance to see it.

Ok folks I had a lot of time on my hands today so please humor me. I've seen this photo dozens of times and there are still some people I don't recognize. I've pinned down a few, Judy Garland may be incorrect. So who are the rest of these people? Oh and according to IMDb this was taken in 1942, so where's Cranberry Juice? (that's Joan!)

I've pinned down a few, Judy Garland may be incorrect. So who are the rest of these people? Oh and according to IMDb this was taken in 1942, so where's Cranberry Juice? (that's Joan!) Okay Shaun...Here goes: Front row, left to right: Jimmy Stewart, Margaret Sullivan, Lucy, Hedy Lamarr, whatsername, LB Mayer, Greer Garson, Irene Dunne, Susan Peters, Ginny Simms, Lionel Barrymore. Second row, left to right: Harry James, Brian Donlevy, Red Skelton, Mickey Rooney, William Powell, Wallace Beery, whatsisname, Walter Pidgeon, Robert Taylor, Jean Pierre Aumont, Lewis Stone, Gene Kelly, Jackie Jenkins Third row, left to right: Tommy Dorsey, George Murphy, Jean Rogers, James Craig, Donna Reed, Van Johnson, Fay Bainter, Marsha Hunt, Ruth Hussey, Marjorie Main, Robert Benchley Fourth row, left to right: Dame May Whitty, Reginald Owen, Keenan Wynn, Diana Lewis, Marilyn Maxwell, Esther Williams, Ann Richards, Martha Linden, Lee Bowman, Richard Carlson, Mary Astor Fifth row, left to right: Blanche Ring, Sara Haden, Fay Holden, Bert Lahr, Frances Gifford, June Allyson, Richard Whorf, Frances Rafferty, Spring Byington, Connie Gilchrist, Gladys Cooper Sixth row, left to right: Ben Blue, Chill Wills, Keye Luke, Barry Nelson, Desi Arnaz, Henry O'Neill, Bob Crosby, Rags Ragland I WOULD like you all to believe that I KNEW all of these. I'd say I could peg about 85-90% of them. The rest I got from a book that includes the photo - The Man Who Shot Garbo - albeit a different take than the one you posted. I've now seen a few different versions of from this shoot; not sure which was the "official" one, but I think the one in the book is it....In the one you posted, Kate has her arms crossed in front of her. In the one in the Garbo book, she has her left arm slung over the back of the chair. I think Bull must have had a helluva time getting all of them to look in one direction, so in all of the shots I've seen, many are looking in different directions. Funny, really, cause here we have all these professional people in the business and they are as disorganized as if it was a family photo.....I've also seen one where Spencer is leaning over talking to Kate but I'm damned if I could tell you where I saw it. Was years ago. Interesting note: In the first row alone there were four redheads: Lucy (fire engine), Kate (auburny, but most definitely red in the reproduction of the Bull phot in the book), Greer Garson (a match for Lucy's flaming red tresses) and Irene Dunne (somewhere between Lucy/Greer and Kate)...Then, of course, we can't forget Red Skelton.....

Wow thanks Judy!! I never would have guessed that was Greer Garson. Heck, I wouldn't have guessed over half of them. I can't help but imagine what it would feel like to have been there when this was taken, surrounded by those film legends.
But where is Judy Garland and Joan Crawford? You would think they would have waited until two of their biggest stars could be in the picture.
Does anyone know if the other studios took cast pictures like this one, especially Warner Bros.?

You're welcome! I've no idea where Judy is, but Joan left Metro for Warners, and I think it was the year this shot was taken: 1943....So they lost Joan and gained Kate...for a while anyway.

Well, I think I know where Judy was. SHE WAS PLAYING WITH ELMO. Classic Stars + Muppets = Best. Friends. Forever! A friend found this on the Internet years ago. We did not doctor this. Also, the billions of stories that came out of this one picture alone are priceless. Kate hangs out with Snuffalufagus and Big Bird. Greta - with The Count. Jeanette MacDonald = Elmo and Judy. George HAHAHA = Burt and Ernie. And Spence lives in a bush cottage next to Oscar in the garbage can. These are the things that we talked about. Anybody up for the canon ball story? Uhm. Maybe I'll PM you it..... if you want to enter 2001 with me... But in all seriousness, thank you Judy! Oh and Richard dear, how did you not know that was Mama Greer? For shame, young man. Hee Hee

Twas I who didn't know! Those faces aren't much larger than a pin hole. No human eye can determine who they are. Except for Kate. I love how she stands out from a crowd, even when the crowd is a gang of movie people, each one dripping with star power.
