my feeling is that kate used 'girl' in the case just to refer to a female, no reference to age. honestly, depending on the tone of the sequence, a woman referring to another adult woman as "girl" can be friendly or affectionate ... certainly for woman of kate's generation ....
heck i do it myself ... "then came this woman" may seem too formal in some circumstances.
my opinion ...

Thank you Martha, it makes sense. English is not my first language so I am sometimes not sure about the little differences in meaning.

I live in Serbia (grew up in Croatia, they used to be a part of Yugoslavia once). It's a great place, but it has a disadvantage that I can't just walk into any bookstore and find a book about Kate, or a dvd or anything. But I find my ways ;D
Did I read somewhere that you're a fellow European, Carol?

Serbia, how cool!
Yap, I'm from Portugal. Here, Kate is rather popular, but still you can't find that many of her movies in stores. Most of my DVDs were bought on zavvi lol.

Hahaa can I just say, I am working my way down the forum quickly because I've got a tone of Uni work to do but I'm quickly replying to recent threads, and Martha I just called you a girl in another thread 2 seconds ago and I get into this one and read the top of this page haha.. hope that's okay chum!?
Now, Serena I can tell you are a devoted Kate fan. It's tricky when it's difficult to get Kate stuff nearby. I thought it was bad in Sydney but slowly it's getting a little easier to find Kate things around, just got to find where to look. I have friends who are from Serbia, I take my hat off to you for getting any Kate stuff!

Hey Jess, yeah, I can tell you it's pretty difficult to get Kate stuff in Serbia, but I'm managing somehow, most films can be downloaded from the internet and I can get books when I travel abroad. But it's also kinda nice that I can't get all the stuff at once, this way I'm really happy when I find something new that I haven't seen before. Wow, you live in Sydney, this board really has members from all over the world, brilliant

I totally agree, this board is awesome for starters! We're very multicultural aren't we! I also agree about not getting stuff all at once. When I first became a fan, I was writing on here every time I saw a movie for the first time and everyone else was just as excited for me and it's always nice to hear what someone thinks of a movie the first time they watch it! So please do that! I still haven't seen all of Kate's films but I don't mind, I will one day. Until then, when I see a new one it's super exciting and I write a long droaning review on here for everyone to read and see what their responses were to the film! Jess

Reminds me to speak in my own voice (on my blog, in conversation, in any writing) .. you know?

That's a good exercise for a writer Martha! And I know what you mean, Barbra [Streisand] has said something similar about being called a girl by men in a demeaning way, so I know exactly what ya mean! I think she put it in a movie, can't recall which one - for that exact purpose. I think it was in The Owl and the Pussycat or one of those older films, to indicate she was being spoken down to. As I'm learning in my first year of Uni, it's alllll about the context! (as you said!) Jess

I´m reading "Me"/ "Yo misma" (the spanish title) these day. I love this. Kate had got a strength and conviction very contagious. She lived her life with happiness. You can feel it whan you read her stories. She adored Fenwich and Spence. I like this chapter very much. She survived several failures and this is a great learning. SeeU

Me too, I adore 'Me', it's such an inspirational book. I read parts of it every night before I go to bed.

Oh just bits and pieces. It usually depends on my mood. When I'm feeling down, I usually read about the time when they thought she wasn't attractive, cause whe I was a little bit younger people in school made fun of me and said I was ugly and stuff... And so it makes me feel better to know that she's been through a similar situation. And I love when she talks about Spence.. it's heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time.
