The Kanin book is a fantastically well written book - he knew them both very well and went out with Katharine in the late 1930's .
Also its a great portrayal of Spencer - Kanin knew him well as a friend - there are some hysterically funny sections .

Yessire, I thoroughly enjoyed Garson's memoir. Who wouldn't? It's a great reliable source to understanding their relationship a little better. Not all the crap that later authors wrote about. I don't know why Kanin felt like he wouldn't be stepping on Kate's toes, though, for writing and publishing it so close to Spencer's death. For publishing it at all really, considering her beliefs about her/their privacy. I'd be pretty burnt up about it, too. I am glad that they made up a lot farther on down the road.
Catherine, you will need to read some parts of that book alone. Omg, the restaurant stories. And the one about Cary at the party. First time I read it I was in a hotel lobby in NYC and I got some crazy looks. Bwahaha.

Apparently one of the issues with the Kanin book was that it upset Louise Tracy - Katharine went out of her way to avoid doing that and then Kanin publishes the book pretty soon after Spencer's death

Yeah, that's what I didn't undertand about him doing that so soon. What about poor Louise Tracy? It just seemed sort of careless and disrespectful on his behalf...
And yet, I'm soooo glad he chose to write it. 'Cus for what it might have done in that area, the book is just charming. You can tell he loved Kate and Spence very much and illustrates such a warm picture of them seperately and as a couple. And I just get the warm fuzzies all over when I read the tiny part when Spence calls her 'honey'. Awwwwgjhgjfgfjggfhfh. ;D

I read somewhere that Kate actually cooperated with him while he was writing the book. I don't know if this is true and to what extent.

Katharine didn't cooperate with Kanin in the writing of the book - Kanin did write an article about Katharine in the early 1970's and then Kanin's publisher suggested that Kanin write about Spencer and Katharine - Katharine really didn't care about the initial article but she was pretty upset about the book
