Its poorly written but the Higham 1975 biography has stuff from people who were never interviewed again . Its not a great biography but it does give insights into incidents from different angles .
Young Kate by Anderson - well worth reading

Prideaux's book has unique material in that he offered insight into Kate in the later years of her performing life.
Though not a biography, "Tracy and Hepburn" by Garson Kanin is still "golden" because it spoke of Kate and Spencer as a flesh and blood couple, good times and bad, fun times and non-fun times. I loved reading about the long phone calls ST would make to her in the day and age when a call overseas was a major pain in the neck. The frequency and length those calls was testimony to the love he felt for her. Having been on the receiving end of phone calls from a loved one far away back in the seventies, waiting for the operator to connect us and then hoping to be able to hear every word and hoping that the voice wouldn't be distorted --- well, a lot of love and patience went into calls like the ones Spencer made to Kate when she was out of the country making a film. Leave it to Garson Kanin to be sensitive to the signifigance of those calls.

And as we know Katharine used to call Spencer even when she was in Australia .
I can't imagine the expense or effort that must have taken and she called him every day !!!

I just got a copy of the Garson Kanin book - it arrived just after Christmas. Not read it yet. Only just finished the new Patricia Cornwell, which I had to read first because I love her books. And I have a couple more to read before I start it because they belong to other people. Can't decide whether I'm going to pick up the DaVinci Code of the latest Harry Potter first. But I'm going to have to get through them quickly because I can't wait to read the Kanin book!

The DaVinci Code! I can't wait until the movie comes out. I love Audrey Tautou and Tom Hanks. I need to read the book first though... and I have never even picked up a Harry Potter book. A friend of mine is competely *flabbergasted* by that fact. He's donating the first copy so I can join the rest of the world.

Catherine! I can't believe you've never read a Harry Potter book! I don't think I know anyone who has never read one. Ok, so there's my dad. But I he's not much of a reader. I could probably count the number of books he's read on one hand. I even have a copy of the Philospher's Stone in Welsh!
I went with the DaVinci Code anyway though. It's had so much hype and I'm fed up of people asking me if I've read it and having to say no. Though I don't know who Audrey Tautou is. In fact, I didn't even know they were planning to make a film of it.

And I only read The Philosopher's Stone because my son got it as a birthday present when it first came out and it lay on the shelf untouched for weeks. Funny how neither of my kids got into Harry Potter, but their Mum loves that kind of make believe world Have to say though, The DaVinci Code was an excellent read - not so sure the film will be as good somehow. Mind you, it's usually the way with film adaptations, especially when you've read the book first.

...and a fourth. I tried reading Potter once but I just didn't care for it.
BUT I am in the middle of reading Shadows on a Wall by Ray Connolly...it's an awesome book. It's about the making of a colossal movie--the most expensive ever made--and the equally colossal egos of the stars. All of the behind the scenes stuff reminds me of biographies of Kath...how she would put her two cents in on the script and the like. Go read it. NOW. Are you reading it yet?

Re: Harry Potter -- add a fifth; same as regards The DaVinci Code.
Here's an interesting book with a Kate connection: "Sudden Sea:The Great Hurricane of 1938" by R.A.Scotti The book includes a photo of Kate, quotes from "Me" and a segment about Kate and Howard Hughes called "Gone with the Wind". This book is a fascinating, page turning account of the 1938 hurricane that devastated southern New England and destroyed the Hepburn family home at Fenwick. The blithe photos we've seen of Kate sitting on the john reading the paper surrounded by mud and rubble or digging in the mud for the family silver take on a different aspect when viewed through the lens of this catastrophic natural disaster. Kate and her mother and Dick were very fortunate to escape with their lives that day and this book reveals the horror of the entire event. Well worth the time taken to read it.

Whew I don't feel like such a loser now ;D But I will give it a chance just to see what all the commotion is about. Gem, it's not just a UK thing. It's like a worldwide phenomenon. They have midnight parties whenever her next book is released. And people go in hoards, some dressed in Harry Potter attire. It's rather scary. But I guess I would do the same if it was some Kate release party ;D So can't judge. Sherry -- I'll look for that book. It always amazed me how nonchalant Kate seemed to be about the hurricane. You see pictures of people from Hurrican Katrina standing over the rubble of their homes, sobbing... and then there's good ole Kate sitting in a bathtub, having a laugh, on top of what's left of her house. I guess she didn't lose everything like Katrina victims but still... she really did look at the positive side of everything.

The hurricane - when Katharine died in 2003 the Hartford times had a large segment devoted to her and there was at last one picture where Katharine looked pretty shellshocked .

Yes, they do that over here too! I've never queued up at midnight wearing a witches hat to buy the book though. Somebody please give me a good slap if I ever suggest it. I remember being on a night out in Cardiff (capital of Wales) once though, when I used to live there, and we saw them all queuing up outside Waterstones. Crazy! I really like the books, but I'm not that nuts.
