Well, I've just seen the first promo run on TCM for the Cavett interviews they will be airing in September. Included in the clips are a couple of glimpses of Kate - including her saying "I find myself absolutely fascinating." Sorta wish they hadn't cut the "Cold sober..." part - but I digress...:-)
What's curious is as far as I know they don't plan to air the Kate shows as part of the menu for September. Still she is in the clips...
No matter....The DVD will be out soon.
But the next thing I noticed is - How effin' fantastic the tape looks. I've been used to watching it on my faded, milky, bad-colored video. But the shots in the promo look pristine!
Oh, it's gonna be great to finally have a high-quality version of this....

Awwww you sound as hyper as I was the first time I saw the promo (as posted on here haha)!!
...but TCM knows that Kath is one of the BIG stars that tunes viewers in, so maybe that's why they used her shots in it. Or TCM REALLY loves Kath as much as we do. I'm going with the latter.
BUT HOLY HOUGHTON THE CDS LOOK GLORIOUS!!!!!!!
::has a Cavett-induced girly fit::

There are not enough words to express how excited and impatient I've become with this DVD set and its release. Katharine Hepburn, Fred Astaire, Bette Davis, Groucho Marx, Debbie Reynolds, Kirk Douglas, Alfred Hitchcock, Marlon Brando, Mel Brooks, Frank Capra, Robert Mitchum, John Huston and Orson Welles. I love all these people! I saw the TCM promo, too, and when I saw Kate...I peed a little. I was THAT excited. This is what I've been waiting for. This DVD set should be treated like the Holy Grail. "Bette, when did you lose your virginity?" Isn't Dick Cavett awesome? He could possibly be the coolest talk show host to ever grace television. If anybody is interested in pre-ordering the DVD online, www.deepdiscountdvd.com is the cheapest I've seen. Only $23. No tax. Free shipping. Credit card payments only, though.

Amber: You know, since Amazon has not shipped yet you COULD cancel your order...I pre-ordered through them, too, and will likely just leave it as is - just wanted to remind you that if you want, you can cancel and reorder at the place Richard noted. The Davis interview is a scream; I remember it from back then. Judy

I've watched all the interviews now. This DVD set is truly a gem. If you haven't bought it yet, shame on you!
Katharine Hepburn
By far the best in the collection. Watching candid Kate as she, Cavett, and the crew prepare for the interview was priceless. You feel like you're watching something that you shouldn't be watching. Like a fly on the wall.
I don't think any fan can find video better than this. I would choose these two hours over any of her films anyday -- I'll probably regret saying that later but as you can see I'm still hyped up about it.
Quotes? "And is that the way you said it" -- referring to Cavett's line in one of her plays. My favorite and the only one I can remember right now. At the end of the interview, although sad, I thought had the cutest moment. Cavett continues to praise Hepburn and at one point says he loves her, and Kate simply smiles and says "continue". I didn't know Kate liked Marlon Brando. "Brilliant actor", her words too. She rocks, but I suppose we know that already.
The Fred Astaire interview was really good also, although he did spend most of his time singing, which was nice, I really wanted to hear more talk from the man. Charming fellow. Truly the definition of class.
Like Judy said, the Bette Davis interview was a hoot. She had a remarkable sense of humor and everything was just a joy to watch.
The Marlon Brando interview was strange. He was strange. I know that having him on any kind of talk show was rare, but I really wished he could've loosened up a bit. He's fascinating. The guy's got such a great voice.
Is it just me or does Orson Welles have a brilliant mind? He seems so knowledgeable about everything. Boy genius.
I'm convinced that Robert Mitchum is that baddest of the bad. Afterall, he has got the most immoral face. Bob was very laid back, looked bored, but had a lot of fun.
Apart from the Kate Hepburn interview, my second favorite would have to be the one with Alfred Hitchcock. It's hilarious. Hitch has such a fascinating mind and a great sense of humor. Everyone should get a kick out of this one.

Apart from the Kate Hepburn interview, my second favorite would have to be the one with Alfred Hitchcock. It's hilarious. Hitch has such a fascinating mind and a great sense of humor. Everyone should get a kick out of this one. Great reporting Richard. I could quote chapter and verse of the Kate interview but want to hear what you all have to say because it gives me great pleasure to hear all of your reactions seeing this legendary interview for the first time. I feel that way about the Sept 11 (how odd it is to write that date now; will never be the same) bonus. This is the first time I'd (or anyone, I guess) seen any of it and it is worth the cost of the entire set. I love it because it gives one the sense of what she was like on a movie set before the cameras started rolling. Some, lazily in my view, call it bossy. I call it concerned about EVERYTHING and how important every detail was to the creation of the whole picture. Favorite moments: When she almost hoists herself over the short wall to get to her chair but stops to ponder whether the glass that is there for her was the same as in the actual interview that had already been conducted. Details. The moment she realizes - after offering him some of the lip balm she carries - her hands: "Oh. Oh" (not Uh oh, like a normal person...but Oh oh :-) "I had a tape on my finger and they were made up" And then when she calls for Phyllis and is told she is upstairs, she just bolts from the chair and goes up rather than have her come down. When the director tells her to talk to him in order to shoot his reaction shots and instructs him not to talk at all - and she smiles mischievously at him and almost inaudibly teases: "You hear that...AT all." And THEN she starts asking him questions and goads him into responding - when she knows full well he's not supposed to say anything. When he is telling her about his start in the business and you can tell she's really listening and he says something like: "And then I went through my drug period." And she looks at him in genuine shock: "Your WHAT?" At which point he says he just said that to get a reaction out of her and she smiles, realizing he's been pulling her leg. When he says that he was a nerdy kid from Nebraska and she expresses surprise at that and says "I didn't know that you from there" and he asks: Why, do I appear to be Continental to you? And the absurdity of the question cracks her up. When the director says they are done and all they need is Dick for the next few shots, she leans in to him and says - kidding - "are you sure you can do it without me?" And Cavett laughs and clearly not wanting her to leave says: "I don't see why I should have to..." Shaun: Get thee to a video store! The other interviews are such a treasure to have - weird as some may be. The Huston one - although slow moving - is also priceless. God, I love that man's voice. And, too, it's fun to watch the one with Capra, Altman, Brooks and Bogdanovich for a few reasons: One: Mel Brooks rules. Two - the way they all deferred to Frank Capra, not the best speaker in the world but a joy to listen to. Three: The comment made by Altman when they are talking about the clock watchers/parking lot owner/movie haters who then ran the studios and how different they were from the tyrant/movie-loving studio heads of the past. And Cavett says something like "they shall remain nameless" - and Altman says, no I'll name one: James Aubrey. Aubrey, it should be noted, was the one who fired Kate from "Travels with My Aunt." Philistine! By the way, just an aside: In the period of time that most of these interviews were conducted - 70/71/72 (Kate's is later, but I mean the others) - you will see an end of show credit for Cavett's clothes for a company called J Press. My father worked for J Press for over 50 years. In some cases he made - and in others fitted - the suits and sport jackets Cavett is wearing. Judy
