I have great news for all of us.
Last night I attended a "Conversation with Dick Cavett" at the Museum of TV and Radio in NYC.
At the end of the evening I asked a Shout Factory representative who was there if they had plans to release Kate's 1973 interview, and the answer was a definite YES.
For those of you who may not know, Shout Factory has recently released DVDs of the Cavett shows. Practically all of you are too young to have seen these shows but, trust me, he had the best of the best on his show - the Lunts, Noel Coward, Lucille Ball, Bette Davis, Lilian Gish, Fred Astaire, Brando, etc, etc, etc. And, of course, Kate, in October 1973.
In 2005 the company released a compilation of shows he did with every great rock star of the 60's that you can imagine: Joplin, Hendrix, Lennon (his Lennon/Ono interview is on on a separate DVD, Harrison, Jefferson Airplane, Crosby, Stills and Young; Joni Mitchel; and on and on and on.
They recently released a set devoted to comedy with people like Groucho and Lucy, etc.
Anyway, I was assured that the Kate interview will be released in its entirety (as opposed to clips in another compilation) and that it will not be that long in the coming.
He couldn't say when, but was very hopeful. It's on their radar.
In 1973, I sat in front of the TV with an audio cassette recorder and taped it. It was SUCH an event. Subsequent to the original broadcast the interview had been chopped up and rebroadcast in 1979 on PBS stations, with Cavett intros, so I managed to get it on video in its somewhat edited from. But this will be the entire thing on DVD.
I have entire portions of this interview committed to memory and am always referring to it. I have other interviews with her on video and tape - as I'm sure some of you do, too. But this was the gold standard and the prospect of having a professional, commercially recorded DVD has me more excited than I can say.
Oh. One story Cavett told: When Kate was doing one of her seasons at Stratford, he had a bit part. He told of her swimming in the ice cold Husatonic River. One day she was a bit late for the matinee and someone was overheard to have said - with a worried expression - that they'd seen her go into the river.
At which point John Houseman, looked up and said: It wouldn't dare!"
