While they were filming State of the Union Menjou allegedly made several cracks at Katharine and accused her of being a Communist . He allegedly said Scratch Hepburn and she will yell Pravda
Spencer apparently was furious at this comment

Why was she accused of being a communist? It seems as though that was the common insult back in those days...

I guess Menjou's pea-sized brain couldn't comprehend someone as lovely and complex as Kate, so to make himself feel better, he called her a commie.

Katharine was a pretty liberal person and in 1947 had made a well publicized speech for Henry Wallace where she denounced McCarthyism and the current political climate of the time . She also wore a red dress .
Also her name had appeared on the list of supposed Communist sympathizers - when the list came out her reply was that she refused to dignify the people involved with a response .
As well Katharine's name had come up in the HUAC hearings .
She was quite vunerable as well because of her personal life .

Good Night and Good Luck -- yes, I saw it. Good movie. Great idea to do it in B&W. Also you look at a jackass like Joe McCarthy and compare it to the stuff going on today and you can see that we haven't learned very much as far as the kind of morons we elect to fill government positions. You also realize why Edward R. Murrow is the gold standard for newsmen. He had the courage to do the right thing and was fortunate that he had some brave people to stand with him. Sherry PS: Menjou was a rightwing reactionary -- he'd be joined at the hip with the rightwingers of today.

I too noticed that the relationship between Kate and Menjou did seem to evolve from the simplicity of Morning Glory to the last film they did State of the Union. Of course the tone of the country changed a lot too between those films but I understand the point behind Kate's dislike of Menjou as she was such a liberal and he was apparantly a conservatve. Living your life according to your beliefs be they conservative or liberal or somewhere in the middle is something Kate was quite good at doing, It seems rare that she sat on the fence about anything and hated seeing her friends ruined or near ruin during the conservative "witch trials" of Congress. Her loyalty to her friends was legendary and I can only say bravo to that many times over.

Hahaha. Adolphe Men-JOO. :snickers:: Oh, but I did enjoy representing him in our HUAC mock-hearing in Film History II at college. I thought I was very clever suggesting that idea. Heee.
I enjoy him, though. For what he is... what that is, I'm not too sure.

so suffice to say Men-Joo did not sit on the fence as it were and seeing how hateful Kate was to him in SOTU I can understand why he could possible have said that infamous quote about scratching a dogooder like Hepburn. Alas she went on to bigger and greater things and Menjou went on to I am not sure ............................
