If there is one thing or one question you would like to ask Spencer what would it be ?
I would like to ask him when he first realised that the relationship with Katharine was serious . Because lets be honest here, he had been around .

What attracted you to Katharine? What made the relationship last?
What was your favorite film you did with Kate?

I'd like to ask who made the first move!
Though of course I would never actually ask it, if I were actually faced with the situation. It is rather personal. But I'd love to know!
Bet it was Kate.

Actually this is my idea of what happened . It was Katharine who fell hard but it was Spencer who made the first move . Why - because in the 1940's there were still conventions and even Katharine probably observed them to a limited extent .

Good question Gem I would like to know the same thing. It seems like Kate would be the one to make the first move but I also agree with smith -- to some extent she might have been conventional -- at least in that area. Or maybe just that situation, I don't know. That's something I don't know a lot about -- her love life. I would be interested to know what her method was ;D

Sometimes even the most unconventional people surprise you . In the days of modern feminism I know many people still like the guy to take the iniative - I do . Also I bet back then that that there was lot more flirtation involved - I am not an expert in 1940's courtship but I am sure that people let relationships evolve more slowly - unless there was a war involved . How did the relationship evolve. Sometimes its best not to know all the details .

Flirtation is so much more interesting. People should do it more often. I am complicated when it comes to the initiator so I won't even go into it ;D

Yep subtle flirtation is great .
It was great to see Katharine and her interaction with Cavett and Donahue .

Yes, our Kate was quite a flirt at times And I don't find it too hard to imagine her making the first move with Spencer, despite the times. She admired him as an actor and had wanted him to co-star in The Philadelphia Story and I doubt it took long for her to become smitten when seeing him in the flesh for the first time, so to speak. Although she apparently often reverted to a more deferential role with Spencer during the course of their private relationship, I don't think she necessarily acted that way at the start and I'm sure she didn't hesitate to make eyes at him. Then again, she played hard to get with Howard Hughes, so who knows.........?

I guess we'll never know. It's an interesting topic though. I definately like a bit of old fashioned subtle flirtation. It's half the fun. But then again, I've been single for the past two years, so don't ever take any love advice from me! Love Gem

I've yet to have an actual beau, so I'm not really sure I am one to talk, but here's my two and a half cents.
I'm pretty positive that it was Spencer that made the first move. I don't really even have any rhyme or reason for it. I just believe that after a few weeks, there is only so much flirtation and sexual tension a person can take. Makes me wonder just what went on the day before they both came on the set and started calling each other 'Kathy' and "Spence". It's funny, because I don't think they even dated. Just went right into the relationship. And Kate did little things to make him know, like wearing nicer clothes and spending a little more time on her makeup. What is flirting, after all? I'm so inexperienced in this area, I really don't know how to act around those other creatures myself. But wait, this is Kate's forum not the "Help Amber with her love life forum", so I'll shut up now. *blushes*

Amber,
I am sure Katharine invited Spencer over to her house for dinner or something like that . She was a smart woman and Spencer was an intelligent man . I am sure they both picked up the signals pretty quickly . There is a great quote in the Berg biography when Joe Mank said he started noticing stuff in the rushes - he thought he was imagining things .
Don't worry your time will come .

I am sure they both picked up the signals pretty quickly . There is a great quote in the Berg biography when Joe Mank said he started noticing stuff in the rushes - he thought he was imagining things . Don't worry your time will come . I recall that what he also said was that -- in addition to whatever he was noticing of a personal nature -- what he thought he was imagining was the fact that they seemed to be imitating each other. I always loved the idea of that. What did it imply? That they each admired each other professioinally (in addition to whatever other feelings were starting to emerge). You know how when you're on a dance floor and you see someone doing a step and you try and imitate it? (Or is that just me? :-)) If what Mankiewicz says happened, I can imagine her looking at him and noticing how low-key and easy he appeared to be. And I can see him looking at her and standing taller, fixing his tie, trying to be less laid back. All done subconsciously, of course, yet seemingly apparent to Joe Mank. Love that idea. Judy
