I'm late in this conversation but whatever. Shirley Booth! A staple of my classic television diet. HAZEL! I watched this when I was a 7-year-old... And am the girl I am today because of it. Or at least I have a proclivity for funny housekeepers. I remember when TV Land aired Hazel about a million years ago. 'K now I feel like grousing about TV Land. Several years ago you could watch Lucy, Dennis the Menace and Hazel in one day and now the only shows from back when that air are Lucy and Leave it to Beaver. The rest is Gunsmoke and Bonanza. However, nothing compares to the travesty that is Nick at Nite. Going back a billion years now...remember when NaN aired Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Dick Van Dyke show?? Today all of their shows are junk from the 90s. Anyway.....who else loves Kate's wardrobe in Desk Set? I think it's some of her very best from all her films.

Today all of their shows are junk from the 90s. I have to respond to this, man. TVLand is crap now. Uhm, Extreme Home Makeover? My High School Reunion? WHAT THE FRESH FLYING FOUR-LEGGED FUDGE? And Nick @ Nite?! Remember the good ole days of Block Party Summer? The theme song that I used to sing. Last Episodes on New Year's Eve and Pilots on New Year's Day. Sigh. I remember when they had quality programming. We grew up in a magical time. It's a death I still feel. R.I.P Nick @ Nite. You are sorely missed. OH MY GRAVY! Look at this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruMoIAB185wAnd THIS: www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQ3vjawSq9ITHE LINE-UP: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXmRMKC5Z0MHell, just watch all the Nick at Nite commercials. Brings a tear to the eye. And, I just went off on a tangent. Moral: Never Assume Stick to the Classics... and Never Put Twinkies On Your Pizza. BACK TO DESK SET. GAH THE WARDROBE! I WANT. My favorite's the dress she only wore for about a hot minute. The red&white&blue vertical-striped one. And that sweet reversible coat. The X-mas-colored one.

DONNA REED! I love that woman. That's a show I would like to see again.
Please someone tell me they remember that old N@N commercial with the milkman who says "look a quarter." Really he pronounced it 'qwadduh.' Anybody?? No one in my family knows what I'm talking about.

YES YES!
And I used to go around and say: "could you spare a qwadduh for a gumbawll?" I was about 8-9? This cracked everybody in my school/dance company up to the point in which I was known as The Qwadduh Girl.
Wow. We're just awesome.

I just wanted to jump on the bandwagon and say I'm so glad I'm not the only one who ADORED this film. I don't understand why it isn't one of the more popular ST KH films. Pure bliss. Yeah, the magic can't really compete with WOTY but what film can?!
Hep, don't be disapointed with SOTU. Someone else mentioned it wasn't particularly right for them. I completely agree. Out of every Kate film I own (let alone just Spence and Kate films) Union is my least favourite film. Majorly missing the chemistry from every other ST KH vehicle although it gave Kate some nice, witty one liners.
Anyway, back to Desk Set aghhh I just love this film. When I watch it, I seem to watch it for days on end.
Kate was very thin in the Desk Set although I don't think she was any thinner than when she was in African Queen (although I realise she got sick). I just always thought of her as a tiny woman. Very athletic.
Best bod award definately goes to Kate in Pat and Mike in the massage scene. Whoa! But there's a whole other conversation for another thread!
Thank you thank you thank you for all those DIVINE pictures at the begining of this thread. Kate and Spence ones were gold!

Okay, I have just watched it with the sound turned up full ball and if you listen carefully, you can hear the crew laughing at Spencer when Kate and Joan Blondell laugh hysterically just before Spence exits the scene. I can DEFINATELY hear more laughs than just two! And I think I can hear male voiced laughs in particular. Listen for it, I can for suuure hear it! Just after Spencer puts the hat on and they crack up for a couple of seconds before he walks out and the scene fades.. so y'all were right in suspecting some Tracy improv there!

I just realised who Bunny Watson's beau is! None other than Gig Young who ties in with my most recent fascination, being the ex husband of Bewitched star Elizabeth Montgomery! How wierd is that. I never realised who it was before. And watching the biographies of Miss Montgomery and their horrible marriage, it makes me think that Mr Young's performance as the unlikable guy in Desk Set was probably not far from his real life persona.
That's all for Jess' useless tidbit for today! haha
P.S. I LOVE Desk Set. Love it love it love it love it! I don't care that it was a less popular Tracy Hepburn film, I love it. It's light and funny and there's something totally real about it in a way.

#1 Nick and Nite rocked! TV Land now depresses me, if I see one more episode of Gunsmoke... #2 Kate was slim in this but IMO not as thin as when she did Pat and Mike. I guess it was because of her getting so sick in Africa, her face was so thin it was scary. #3 I just finished this movie and LOVED it. I'm not in love with Kate and Spence (please don't kill me) I like her with Cary better, but this was great! The script was a bit weak but the acting was good all around. I love Kate's expression at the champane bottles exploding. There were a lot of cute things in, its on my rewatch list.

Does anyone else think that the DVD cover art looks nothing like Spence? It looks somehow more like Kirk Douglass or someone like that.... strange!?
