In the past week I have seen Kate's AND June's versions of Little Women. Before anyone kills me for the following comment, read WHY!! ;D I have to say I liked June's better. Largely because the sound quality and the colours are divine. If anyone wants to catch the June Allyson version, search for it on YouTube before they find out and delete it! A few reasons. I think the major one was the role of the professor. I didn't believe it in Kate's version. I didn't feel any chemistry and I didn't want them to get together in the end! Whereas with June's version, you really root for the professor. They really give him heart, you want them to be together in the end. There is definate chemistry. I think I see him more as her 'father' in Kate's version which was why I was freaked out when they ended up together. BY the freaking way!!!!!!!!! Um, has anyone else noticed (you probably all have haha) that the guy that plays the professor in June Allyson's version is none other than Rossano Brazzi! I almost fell backwards. What a shame he wasn't in Kate's earlier version. I have to say I couldn't stand Liz Taylor in June's version. I hated the character. But I think you're supposed to. She's supposed to be the spoilt, snooty one isn't she? But my favourite thing about June Allyson's version that won me over was the stunning performance of Margaret O'Brien. When the old rich man (I've only seen it once okay, I can't remember all the characters' names lol) gives her the piano, Miss Margaret makes your heart melt. The two best "criers" in the industry at the time, Allyson and O'Brien. In a classic like Little Women at that time with that stunning colour I thought it was perfectly cast (Taylor aside). Don't hate peoples remember I've only seen them both once, so this is first sighting lol Kate love from down under! Jess

I love every single performance in the '33 version, especially Paul Lukas' as the professor. I think the '49 version pales in comparison - even though it's in color.

Thanks for your reply Judy. And thanks for not hating! hehee As I said I have only seen them both once!! So I'll absolutely write another review once I've seen them both at least a couple of times. Yeah, that whole professor thing. I don't know, perhaps I need to watch it again! All I remember thinking was that he was really old in comparison to Kate's Jo. Although in those days it would have been the norm to marry young to an older man with worldly experience? Kate's felt nostalgic and June's felt one step away from being a musical. They were almost like completely different films. Thanks again for your words. Something to consider when watching next. I'll keep my eye out for the professor. Knowing me, I'll watch it again and he'll be really 2 years older than her. It just felt awkward. Not Kate! Only him.. hmmmmm.. I want to love him Judy, I really do. Hopefully next time I watch it I will! Maybe I was just tired or something lol okay I'm making excuses now, I'm pretty sure I was fully awake throughout Just smaking sure I'm keeping the peace here ... All performances in Kate's version were stunning. The professor was the only thing I didn't like about the film - just to be really clear with everyone! The ONLY thing! That's it Jess

A little thing about our happy board, Jess: We're awfully civilized people. I dunno what kind of experience you've had on other boards, but here we're not going to bite your head off if you say, oh, perhaps you didn't like her performance in a certain movie. We'll tell you a million reasons why we think you're WRONG! DEAD WRONG! (just jokes), but we won't shun you like some kind of non-believer. That's silly.
And I like the Allyson version better, too. YEAH, I SAID IT!

Naawww thanks Amber I've heard of boards banning people and all kinds of crazy stuff like that. I know you guys aren't like that but since it's a "fan" page I didn't want to seem like I was bagging Kate or the film. Because Kate herself was (to use a Streisand reference, you'll get used to it lol...) like "buttah"!! Just bagging the professor heehee Your posts always make me laugh lol ... with you not at you Jess

like buttah .. all streisand references understood, acknowledged, loved by me over here, jess. by the way, a very few "bannings" have occurred on this board, but only for truly egregious behavior. at least for the time i've been around. very tolerant and if i may say intelligent comrades here. and i'm talking about everyone ELSE not me ..

Uhm..............I like June's version better too (three?).
I ADORE Kate in LW. That was my first Kate movie, and I promptly fell in love with her when she was sliding down the banister. Hadn't seen her onscreen for 5 minutes and she'd won me totally and forever.
But Kate, Edna May Oliver (ALWAYS A WINNER. ALWAYS.) and Spring Byington are the only things I like about the film, as opposed to the June version, where I like everyone. I like the costumes better in June's version too. So......::looks around uncomfortably::

.... i think this is the first movie i ever saw of kate's. i watched it numerous times when i was a little girl. i just loved it, still do. JUST what I was going to say. I remember my grandma pulling this film out for me to watch when I was little (like, 4 or 5). She always bought me the 'popular' movies of the time, but after finding out that I liked the 'older' movies better she let me watch Kate's 'Little Women.' I didn't really *know* who Kate was then, but after "rediscovering" her, I had a little 'aha! moment.' I've seen the '49 version (but not the '94 one... yet. I do intend to), but the '33 version is still my favorite.

This movie was one of the first Kate movies I saw, and it has been a favorite of mine ever since ! I love it ! I've seen the 1994 version too, but not the 1949 one yet ... I loved the new version as well, but I don't think I'm the only one here who thinks that... well, Kate was born to play this one ! She WAS Jo ! Gosh, just thinking of it, I get goose bums ! She did a beautiful job with that part ! I think if I have to say one thing I didn't like so much about it, it's Amy. Not the character itself, but the fact that she looks the same age all through the movie, and I didn't get how young she was to begin with, before I saw the 1994 version. But that's just a little thing... Oh, and one thing more - I didn't like Laurie much in either version (I can't wait to see the 1949 version, cause I love Peter Lawford) but Kate's Laurie just freaks me out a bit, and so does the new Laurie... But I love the Laurie/Jo story and well, being the obsessed Kate fan that I am - I made a tribute to them ;D Here : www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwHDWgHOKW0
