Whoa never heard of it. The movie was made in 1934 with Helen Chandler playing the part of the daughter. She had a role in CHRISTOPHER STRONG. www.imdb.com/title/tt0025417/

As a sidenote to my actual point here - I have to say I recently fell somewhat in love with Greta Garbo. I think it just took some time to appreciate her. I mentioned not really being able to "get" her on this thread - thought I would update that.
ANYWAY!
Somewhere I read that Bette Davis had also at one time wanted to do Steel Magnolias with all of the characters a generation older, with her as Ouiser and Kate as Clairee. I find that an intriguing idea, frankly.
Steel Magnolias is, sadly, a favorite of mine - and Shirley MacClaine and Olympia Dukakis are my favorite parts of it...
I'm not sure if this is true about Bette wanting to do it, but 'twould have been interesting.
Still don't like that woman. She has some good movies, but over all I just don't like her as an actress. I would have seen that version of Steel Mags for Kate.

I SMACKED OUISER BOUDREAUX.
IMHO, both Bette and Joan are brill. Pop in Now, Voyager, Alyssa. There's a reason why so many people worship her: she had the CHOPS, son. Do you own the Dick Cavett Old Hollywood boxset [the one with the Kate interviews]? Bette's hysterical and well-worth watching anyday, I think.

I also need to get the Cavett box. It's been on my wishlist for a long while also. My trouble is that it costs a lot of NZ money to import the stuff I want. Le sigh. Bette is definitely interesting. I have a few of her films. I just find her acting hammy. Now, Voyager is a sappy mess. But I'm a sappy mess by the end of it. So I guess it works in some way. The thing I find with La Bette is that as I watch her work I find myself imagining other actresses in it, and I always like that thought more. For example, Dark Victory I've always thought a Hepburn role. Mr. Skeffington a Crawford. The Letter a Stanwyck. etc. It's kind of an odd love hate thing with Bette and I. She's definitely not among what I would call my favorites. But everyone is different, Thank God. Do get Now, Voyager Alyssa. Or get the first boxed set. It's been repackaged for Bette's 100th anniversary. And they're good films, even if they are a bit hammed up. And get the Joan Crawford set too. She's MARVELOUS

Oh snap, darling. I forgot to mention All About Eve. N,V and AAE seem to be the go-to for people who are new to Bette. Then slowly work your way backwards into the 40s--->30s. If you don't get a nice feel for her after, say, the 6th movie of her's, switch to somebody else. But come back to her! There's Missy Stanwyck [who, btw, turns 101 today!!!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DARLING!!!!] Myrna? Joan? Jean Arthur? Garbo? [Two-Faced Woman has Kate people in it and a really snappy dance.... although it made her put the kabosh on her career...] Jeanette Macdonald? Tallu? Needleno---I mean, Irene Dunne? Maybe not.
Or, ya know, watch an episode of The X-Files and fall in love with Gilly Anderson. It's SO EASY TO DO THAT.
Ohhhhh, it's like---like---like you're my little ball of clay that I can mold.

Roz Russell blew me away in The Women. I've seen a few of her other movies and they've all failed to thrill me as much as The Women did. Although, of course, The Women was just such a brill flick. I mean...the whole cast was fantastic.

Roz is Star of the Month on TCM here in the states. I've been able to see quite a few of her movies and they really are hit or miss. I loathed It's No Time For Comedy, which is curiously named "Guy With a Grin formerly It's No Time For Comedy" in the opening credits. Considering the talent involved (Jimmy Stewart costars) it was quite the disappointment. Man-Proof, though really a Myrna Loy vehicle, wasn't very good either. However, My Sister Eileen was wonderful as was Craig's Wife. Craig's Wife was later remade with Joan Crawford as Harriet Craig so you may want to hunt that one down Shane.

I saw No Time for Comedy years ago on TCM and I didn't enjoy it either...something about it wasn't appealing. I don't remember much of it but I do remember not liking it.

Jimmy Stewart's character is a really loathsome one. He treats Roz like dirt and she takes his sorry butt back at the end. Now THAT burns my goat. I hated You Belong To Me, with Stanwyck and Henry Fonda, for the same reason. Even the title makes me cringe on that one.
