Adored it! Venice is gorgeous and this is the only film, theatrical or otherwise, I've ever seen do it justice. Rossano Brazzi is delish! While it is a teeny bit melodramatic it was the 50s and it's one of my favorite films.

Judy wrote: "For me, there's a direct through-line from Little Women to The Philadelphia Story to Summertime to Long Day's Journey Into Night. And that is this ability she has as an actor to dig deep into these women's heart and reveal their fears, their anxieties, their joys, their terrors, their defeats and their successes - in short, their humanity."
To that beeeuuutiful sentence, I would add "Alice Adams". I am sure the things that happened to KH earlier in life must have made her acutely aware of how it felt to be vulnerable or different.

I'm watching Summertime as I write and I think, yep, each time I watch it I love it more! It's gotta be up there in my top 3 all time films.
The best part is that we get to see Katharine's REAL beauty for perhaps the first time on screen. Those freckles are divine. Kate's new 'natural' look adds a layer to the character I'm sure Lean was well aware of.
It's funny in Woman of the Year when they're in the bar, Spencer's character Sam makes reference to the freckles on her nose and Katharine as Tess' suggests to "..maybe bring them out". Well she brought them out and what a hit!
I loved every minute of her natural look on screen and wish they had used her natural beauty more in her earlier years but it just wasn't done. Although I do think her lack of makeup particularly contributes to this vulnerable character of Jane and definately wouldn't to a strong minded Tess.
Oy, the ending. Your heart sinks for them!
I'm up to this part now;
"Say it again"
'Say what?'
"My name"
'Ren-n..'
Haha I don't care how corny it is in parts (especially referring to the "fireworks" LOL) I love every minute of this film.
OH AND.. did someone mention there WAS a "lace making" scene? As in when she says 'You promised to take me to see the lace making and now it's too late'?! Originally did they go the next day or something? OH I bet it's somewhere grrr.. i wish they would let fans see these kind of deleted scenes on DVDs
AND did someone else say there was a restored version?
The only flaw this movie has is that it wasn't shot in Widescreen. That's the only thing I can fault with it.
LOVES IT.
P.S. How long is Kate's hair?! I'm just realising in all these movies if there is a scene with her hair in a ponytail, it's heaps long!

Jess presents: my screen caps ;D I liked this red dress, she didn't wear it long in the film but it was very pretty! I duno how but on Kate a teatowel works.. and of course we know she wears the same outfit (minus the towel) "..where the rainbow fell" Kate is so cute in this scene. And shortly after where she chooses the Gardinia.. ow! Some cuteness.. I don't know why but I LOVE Kate's hair in a ponytail like this. Didn't they have great chemistry. What a perfect leading man for a huge star like Kate. He allows the audience to - even when she isn't facing the screen - look only at her! Is it just me or am I hanging in the wrong crowd.. where are the hand-kissing men gone?! So I capped this cause it was just gorgeous... and then... .. I found this little moment I had never even noticed. HOW FREAKING ADORABLE! Ow sadness.. I just love the look Kate gives here. As if to say "I can't wait to put my slacks back on"; Last but not least, I dedicate this cap to the girl who always uses the saying "MACK" or "mack it". It's not a saying widely used in Sydney but I know what it means and above all, every time I read it I burst out into laughter. So thanks for the laughter (Amber?), this one's for you. The last Summertime MACK! Jess

Oh it was you, thank goodness! I think I should be the "mack" ambassador for Australia. Gotta start working it into conversations.. hahaaa
I don't know why it's so funny... but even now, I'm laughing at the computer ;D
Jess
P.S. watch out for more Mackin' hot cap dedications with love from down under

I don't know why but I LOVE Kate's hair in a ponytail like this. Awwww.... I love that screen cap, too! Mega cuteness! And I too like Kate's hair in a poneytail, like in Undercurrent and a tiny bit of The Rainmaker. Its some gorgeous cinematography as well. I mean, just look at the way they're framed in the shot, and the colors. That was what really struck me about this film.

babytheleopard and exiled, glad I'm not the only one on the ponytail!
I presume it was a directorial choice by Lean to decide on the ponytail for this part of the movie. As if Kate's character is slowly letting go of her old life and becoming more relaxed; hence her hair not up but down etc... the scene would have definately had a different effect if it was in the usual high bun.
I'm pretty sure it was directorial because if you watch the first scene where she is wearing the same outfit (same blue skirt, same shirt plus the teatowel) - she starts the scene with her hair in a ponytail as if to dry it off after the canal incodent. However, as the scene progresses, it's as if Jane is still holding on to the past, making sure that at some stage (I think it's when the older couple comes in and interrupts them) she quickly pins it up into the high bun of her old-self.
Whosever decision it was, it was a great one! I haven't seen The Rainmaker or Undercurrent, but if there's any ponytail action I can't wait to!
