What do people think? Its beautifully photographed and the ideas and themes are quite daring for the time . I love it .

Me too - it's one of my favourites and I've watched it countless times. I love Kate's performance, and think it's one of David Lean's best films too. The photography made me fall in love with Venice, a place I hope to visit before too long. Kate perfectly captured all aspects of the character and I don't believe anyone else could have portrayed the simlutaneous inner & external emotions of loneliness & putting on a brave face as effectively as she did.
Admittedly there were a couple of twee moments such as the "ping" when seeing the red shoes in the window, or the fireworks after they enter the bedroom from the balcony, but who's complaining?
Unfortunately I've not had chance to see the restored version - is it really possible to improve this film?

Its a fantastic movie and Venice is the most amazing city - I hope you get there .
One of the great scenes in the movie is the section where the two lovers are talking to each other on the island - in the Berg book he claimed that she changed the subject when he mentione that was a great scene . Sure there are twee moments but hey guys that is the 1950's .

I thought Kate looked beautiful in that movie. It was a very different part for her... more vulnerable than she usually played. I didn't like the ending though! They should have been together!!!

I think that Katharine portrayed one of the central issues in the story very well - that Jane wanted to have a relationship but she was afraid of being vunerable at the same time . I always wonder where actors get the experience to understand the characters that they play - this is a great performance by Katharine

I think this is a sumptuously gorgeous movie - and not just cause of the scenery (although a more loving look at a city on film would be hard to find).
I think it's beautiful because of the performance at its center. The sense of aching loneliness that Hepburn conveys is palpable - almost makes you want to turn away from the screen it's so personal. But that would be a mistake because if you turn away you miss one of her most poignant, vulnerable and touching performances. She makes you root for her, feel her embarrassments, rejoice in the release of her inhibitions.
For me, there's a direct through-line from Little Women to The Philadelphia Story to Summertime to Long Day's Journey Into Night. And that is this ability she has as an actor to dig deep into these women's heart and reveal their fears, their anxieties, their joys, their terrors, their defeats and their successes - in short, their humanity. I think she was uniquely gifted in this area and I think Summertime is a prime example of her at her prime as an actor.

ha look at that woman behind Kath in the first one. Looks like she's looking for a bathroom. Yeah little toilet humor for you there heh.....
Idea! The one of K on the train hanging out the window..that's a great action shot and would make a nice signature picture. Someone should make one.

*eyeroll* You are SUCH a boy. And yet, now that I'm looking at it....BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!
*sigh* Just think how hott those smooching scenes would've been if they were allowed to open-mouth kiss!!! AWWWWWWWW!!! The celluloid would melt. Or Kath wouldn't do it. Meh.
I have that yellow pressbook! And another yellow one, but I can't find it right now...hmmm...
ps, I also have that white dress. mwahaha. not that EXACT same one, but it's vintage and looks like it a whole lot. I wear it with Kate pride. and I'm a dork kbye.

Me puts Summertime on the top of my Netflix queue. It's been ages since I've seen it.
I've deleted my reply of Summertime because it was idiotic. I'm such a dolt! Kate looks so beautiful in those pictures. I think I'm gonna love this movie this time around.

I just reread Judy's old post in this thread. Don't we ALL just sound like a bunch of idiots compared to her great posts?

EXACTLY.
And that's why I provide nothing more than random outburts of sexual natures connotated with this film. And observations such as the Mama's Family stocking faux pas. And other things I haven't even shared on here and probably never will. ::giggles::
