Much as we all love Kate, I'm sure we can all admit that some of her films weren't exactly awe-inspiring. I don't think she ever gave a really bad performance, but some film roles just weren't her - what do you think?

Spitfire - an appalliing movie with Katharine completely miscast - shame on RKO

Actually, I don't agree....Spitfire is no great shakes as a movie. But I think it's far from appalling.
I think initially it is a jolt to see her play a backwoods character like Trigger. And, yes, it does not exactly fit her like hand in glove. But as the movie progresses, the performance grows on you - at least it does on me. I think the movie is very interesting and kind of cerebral. Very uncharacteristic subject matter at that time in movies. And I think she had the spirit of the character - the lone, ostracized figure full of bravado and confidence in her own ability yet paradoxically vulnerable - down pat.
While some roles suited her more than others and while she gave better performances in some movies than others, I really do believe that her performances, even in the lesser movies, were never less than riveting.

Hmm... Dragon Seed is the only one of those four that I have seen. Suddenly, Last Summer is probably my least favorite KH film although I wouldn't consider it forgettable.

Catherine, I'd be interested to read why Suddenly is your least favourite KH film, especially as I like it so much!
I wasn't so keen on Dragonseed - I've only seen it once, but it seemed to drag on for ages (no pun intended!)
The Iron Petticoat is the one usually panned by the critics and whilst it certainly wasn't one of her best, I'd say it was the presence of Bob Hope that made it so awful. Definitely her worst onscreen partnership.

Ack. Yeah, I can't see Kate co-starring with Bob Hope.
I, of course, loved Kate's performance in Suddenly, Last Summer... but I just wasn't that interested in the storyline. I'm also not an Elizabeth Taylor fan at all so that alone had me weary before even watching it. I will probably watch it again, though, because sometimes I won't like a movie but if I watch it again, I'll notice things I didn't see before and might appreciate it more.

I liked 'Spitfire'.
The only KH film I disliked lower than the rest would probably be 'The Sea of Grass'.
