I found this interesting article about the holidays they spent in Montecatine Terme, in Tuscany (Italy), which is a very popular destination for thermal spa tourism. It look like they used to go there sometimes: in September 1954, in 1959 and in August 1962 (in the same year other guests were: William Holden, Audrey Hepburn, Paulette Goddard, Clark Gable, Charles Boyer, Gary Cooper).
During that time, Katharine was "rebel, bold and nonconformist", while Spencer was more "willing with people", and there are pictures of him with Montecatini's inhabitants, even one pic shot on Viale Verdi with the traditional custom of the scale after the thermal cures (he looked surprised). Katharine wanted "guarded holidays": no official meetings or photographers. Of course paparazzi tried to shoot pictures of the two together, as photoreporter Guido Rastrelli remembers, he and others even faked a car crash to make them stop after a romantic trip in Montecatini Alto. They stopped to help but when they understood the situation, Spencer got angry and demanded the rolls, that were already booked by many agencies.
Apart from this episode, they spent many hours in the suite of the Hotel La Pace, he did the cure too and was open to meet people in and outside the hotel, they went visiting the surroundings; she woke up very early to go hunting, and she liked to drink grappa with her partners. Vittorio Mariottini, hotel general manager from 1943 to 1970, said she accepted his invitation to go hunting and remembered that she was active and determined like in her movies and stayed in the moist barrell for hours, attacked by mosquitoes and other insects.
