I can't believe this. They're remaking State of the union with Richard Gere and Annette Bening. I was like 'Wait what??' This is an outrage. Seriously, I give up. They keep trying to remake all the classics and no matter what we say, they will never realize that people are always gonna prefer the original. Rear window, The Birds, A star is born, and now State of the union?? They better not touch Casablanca. I'm really pissed.. Jesus Christ, are they sooo hungry for money and so desperate for good scripts that they need to remake all the classics?! The whole story here: www.ropeofsilicon.com/article/garry-marshall-directing-gere-and-bening-in-capra-remake

I'm not sure how this will go over. Richard Gere's last few flics have been 'B' movies. I was not a huge fan of this film, it is probably one of my least favorite Hepburn films. I don't know why I just never warmed up to it. I am curious. Who is playing Angela's part?

I don't have a huge problem with this only because I never liked the film. That having said, I don't agree with the whole concept of remaking classic movies. Although I don't know how much of a 'classic' film this particular one is. I never liked Casablanca, but I would be very upset for all of it's fans if it were to be remade! The status of a film like that or The Wizard of Oz should never be touched!
I like the cast. Actually, I'm really happy with it lol I have a feeling this is going to be aimed at an older audience but it's also going to be a comeback of those great romantic films of the 1990s we don't see anymore.
I'd be more annoyed if I saw 'Angelina Jolie and some other young idiot'. I loved Annette Benning in The American President. I'm sure she'll be great in this too. She definately has that 'president's wife' vibe about her.
Amanda, I also wonder, who will be cast in Angela's part? It would be nice to go to an unknown. I do fear that they will sex it up ALOT and that particular part will be alot bigger. That will be a shame if they make it really over the top. Angela played it so subtly in the original. I think someone great for Angela's part would be Catherine Zeta-Jones (see: The Terminal).
Carol, before you continue, I should tell ya, I'm the Streisand officianato over here haha although I actually really didn't like ASIB as a film, I think it would have been awesome with someone OTHER than Kristofferson; I do think it was great for the popular culture movement, with new great original songs. After all, if it wasn't for that movie, we never would have had Oscar winning 'Evergreen' which is one of the biggest hit singles to date. Possibly the biggest from an original soundtrack, but don't quote me on that one.
I think if remakes bring something comlpetely new and fresh to the table, and relates it to today's audience I don't have a problem. I try to see it as a completely new movie. You either need to make something better (which I hope they can do with State of the Union) or they need to make it completely different (as they did with the rock version of ASIB, they basically only kept the original themes of the movie in tact and changed everything else making it relevant to it's audience of the time).
Hmm.. did any of that make sense lol probably not. I'm working on an assignment that was due on Thursday last week LOL okay, leaving now!
The Women is a great example of what I'm talking about.. a remake where they didn't make it better than the original (how could you), nor did they bring anything original to the table. A complete disaster.
Amanda, I know what you mean, Gere hasn't done many big budget's lately! I wonder how he will go with this kind of film. It should be interesting.
I wonder how the rest of us feel about this. Carol, don't worry, I'm fairly certain I will be the only one with this opinion haha

We've posted this before, but it's nice to have new info! I'm willing to bet they're going to completely change the movie; they'll have to. It'll be like ASIB, as Jess describes it- just the skeleton of the plot. A lot racier, too...which will be fine, as 60-odd years have passed. SotU is one of my all-time favourite Kate films, but if they make it as different as we seem to think, it won't really be much of a "remake" at all- which will make it easier to see. Also, Bening and Gere are more than capable, and will probably have good chemistry. My prediction is good-level comedy, nothing earth-shattering, but amusing enough with somewhat of a message- just like 1948. And Garry Marshall seems perfectly fine to direct such material. As for Lansbury's part, Zeta-Jones might be okay. But it looks like someone could have gotten there already: www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=63903Jessica Biel. Which is a major bucket of meh. But then there's this: UPDATE: Since we discovered Biel's name was in the running for a role in the movie, our original source for the information has seemingly back-tracked, and there's a chance that Marshall might not even be doing the movie and if he's out, so is Jessica Biel. In fact, Richard Gere may not even be attached to the movie anymore, and they might be starting from scratch. So... yeah.

haahaha I like that disclaimer at the end. Hilarious.
If Garry Marshall directs it, this will be a successful light romcom as most of his movies (which I ADORE) are. If not, this could become another disaster movie remake.
Jessica Biel - meh. Not sure what she thinks she's going to bring to sex up that sort of role?? Quite happy to have her with Marshall. He does work magic somehow with any actress. I'd prefer Biel in with Marshall than both of them off the project. Fingers crossed.
If they're doubting Gere's involvement, it sounds like this is in VERY early stages still.
CFK, I know what you mean, I also think it won't be much of a "remake". Totally agree there.
I've got to watch this film again some time soon. I want so much to love it!

Jess, I know you're a major Streisand fan, I didn't mean to insult, I was talking about the remake they're gonna do now. It's like the third remake or something...
Seems like today in Hollywood, they need the money so much that they'll remake ANYTHING. There is no Hitchcock film, for example, that hasn't been in the discussion room for a remake, and two of them were remade, including my favourite Rear Window.
But anyway, I know you guys don't really mind the remake and I can understand why. But I've always thought that no one should touch classic movies or colorize them *cough Ted Turner cough*, and if people, specially young people, know that there was an original one, they'll never bother to watch it, they'll say something like '1948?? You mean black and white? No matter it was remade' or something ignorant like that...
Ah yes The women... a totaly disaster from what I heard.. I didn't see it. But I love the original!

This doesn't bother me. Maybe I'll do some crowing when I read that THE PHILADELPHIA STORY or BUB is being remade.

Didn't Kevin Spacey try back when he was performing in it in London? (Phil Story, I mean.) So glad it didn't get very far...Spacey as an actor, yay, but as CK Dexter Haven? *shudder*

I would protest outside the studio if BUB is remade. No way!
I'm not too upset about this one. It might be good? I just didn't really care for the movie. I hope they rework the script a bit, maybe that would help.

::pokes head in:: So, am I all alone in the SotU love? Because, over-all, I rate this one higher than P&M. I LIKE IT THAT MUCH. I've always said that for all the athleticism Kate displays in P&M, it's really Spencer that shines in that film. And, I-I don't know. Maybe I have a thing for political dramas adapted from plays...? Still, I'll add my voice to the chorus of "I Don't Cares", re: a remake. Just one last thing: WHAT IS THIS STUPID-LOOKING THING SHE DOES IN THE WINDOW? SHE'S PRACTICALLY POKING HERSELF IN HER DAMN EYE. ALSO, VAN IS ABOUT TO YUCK ALL OVER THE PLACE. Katie and I waved like this to every. single. boat. on Smith Mountain Lake last summer. We even made Trixie, who was a puppy at the time, do it. Consequently, neither one of us can wave normally anymore. (Yeah, I know, "Cool story, bro!") I....I don't believe I actually spent an hour making this crummy gif. If Katharine Hepburn could return my life at her nearest convenience, it would be much appreciated. Well, in any case, it exists now. Use it wisely, Internet.

Clearly, I'm a speedy!poster and don't always read up-thread, as any contributing member of a forum should probably make it a habit to do. Allow me to engage you in an enthusiastic high-five, kind sir. Sazaracks on me!

I think that line for line it's one of the best movie comedies made in that period. The script's perfect. I WILL agree, though, that Spencer kinda owns the movie. I always put his performance in it on my list of top ten ST performances. But the kid was pretty good, too. As was the entire supporting cast. The only wooden folks in the bunch were the sports figures, but then, they were athletes and not actors. Anyway, I'm a Pat and Mike fan AND a State of the Union fan.

OMG you guys I ADORE Pat & Mike. I gush about it at every opportunity. This is no exception. You're both right Judy and Amber, it is Spencer's film. It is really his comedy highlight film I rekon. Really a great one. Kate definately shines for me as well though, playing in the distance as she seems to be doing, I love the stuff in the film. I think other than WOTY, their chemistry in Pat & Mike has got to be up there. Like I've said, I really want to love State of the Union, but I just don't. I think I might as the years go by. My taste in films change from year to year. As much as I want to, I've realised that I really do not like Casablanca. That having said, I used to hate Groundhog Day and I bought it a short while ago simply because it had Director's commentary on it (obsessed with that feature on DVDs) and now I LOVE IT! Carol, no offence towards me at all pally I just didn't know if you knew haha.. and as I said I actually didn't like Streisand's ASIB. I hated all those drug / drinking themes. Which I guess I also didn't like in the original. But that version particularly. I think you've really got to be a kid of that generation to like it. I think it's a generational film. All good this end! Ambs, how the HEEEK did you do that screen cap that is more than a screen cap? It's like an avatar moving thingy! I'm impressed. And oh yeh: um Kathy's poking her eyeball from what I am seeing?? What goes on! Jess
