Lately, I've been struck by how many people I've been meeting who rave about Kate, and then it turns out some other would be actress is their absolute favorite. Usually it's that hack B. Davis too. I'm starting to get a bit disgruntled. This is my face right now --> For me, other actresses are great (not Davis mind you) but... KATE IS ALWAYS NUMBER ONE! How about ya'll?

style icon. luminous actress, great talent for living. kate has a huge part of my fan's heart. the rest i give to judy garland ... a kate colleague and different kind of performer. both deeply respected each other's talents (note what kate says about garland in ME, for example ... sweetly 'gets' her). 'nuff said. i feel i can live the duality. i am a gemini after all.

i am a gemini after all. Oh, me too Kate is my favorite, absolutely. I have a few actresses I love (Helen Mirren, Myrna Loy, Lauren Bacall, Michelle Pfeiffer, Danuta Stenka and Marzena Trybala - two Polish actresses, and much more). But they are "just" the great actresses (well, maybe Marzena Trybala is someone more, but I saw her on the stage and talked withe her a few times). I don't have to know much about them. I don't have to read all the things they said. I don't have to have all movies they acted in (and I don't have to watch this movies million times). I don't have them on my desktop and I don't try to pretend I speak English on their forums. Yeah, Kate is my favorite.

You've been pretending you speak English, Kama? You seem like an expert English speaker to my ol' Kentucky ears (in this case, eyes). Granted, we're known for mangling the language. To answer your question Shane, yes Kate is my very favorite actress. She's the first I took an interest in--from any generation-- meaning I've devoured all of her films and poured over every printed word I could find on her. There are other actresses (and actors too) whom I like very much including Stanwyck, Garbo, Irene Dunne, Myrna Loy, Ida Lupino, Agnes Moorehead and yes, Bette Davis. To be frank, Davis is my second favorite. Please don't beat me up. ;D However, I don't feel compelled to collect all the movies these ladies ever made. I want to see them all, but I don't need a copy of every one of them cluttering up my shelves. It's a different story with dear Kate. And I don't have ten plus books about Agnes Moorehead!

Kate has always been my favorite also. But I like a lot of other actresses as well -- too many to name -- but my top ten are currently, and these are in order too:
Katharine Hepburn Bette Davis (Shane must be steaming by now) Audrey Hepburn Joan Crawford Barbara Stanwyck Judy Garland Vivien Leigh Ingrid Bergman Lauren Bacall Greta Garbo
It's hard enough just to narrow it down to only ten, that's why such names like Carole Lombard, Jean Harlow, Marlene Dietrich, Ginger Rogers, Irene Dunne, Jean Arthur, Grace Kelly, Claudette Colbert, Ida Lupino and Judy Holliday, whom I all adore immensely, are not included. The actresses on my top ten list are legendary, in every sense of the word. All recognizable names, and for good reason too. These women are talent. They are beautiful. And I'd do every one of them!

GRRRR! To the Davis fiends.
Its funny with Bette. I can enjoy her in some of her movies. But ultimately - so over rated. It's just odd.
There are many actresses I adore Kate (no kidding) Joan (recent development though...used to loathe her actually) Elizabeth T Rita Hayworth Gene Tierney Vivi (en Leigh) Stanwyck Bergie (Ingrid) BACALL how could I forget her Garbo kinda - I find her less of a great actress than the others, but she had something
but Kate is still number one.
And I agree, some of the others I'm not necessarily interested in owning all of their films. But that being said, where live it's hard to see them WITHOUT buying them from overseas... that's why it's taking me so long to get anywhere. I haven't had the money to buy anything for awhile. I did get La Vie En Rose though. JOY! Marion Cottilard best win that Oscar, or I'll be waging war on the Academy.
First priority on my amazon wishlist is the Crawford boxed sets!! My Gosh. I'M DYING HERE! NEED...TO..SEE...THOSE...MOVIES
I also want to see Old Acquaintance. Because I think it looks delightful.
Why did Davis have pretty much that same pompous, almost british rich bitch accent in everything? I think that's a large part of why I don't like her. She always had this way of talking that was the same in everything, and it was just how she spoke (like Kate's Bryn Mawr thang...). In interviews she talks much more down to earth and less grandly, almost trashily. Yet in the films she had...I'll stop. But yes.
Kateness IS greatness.
People keep arguing with my opinions on imdb. It's strange. I seem to create problems all over the place. "people just seemed to hate me...no matter what I played"

I'm not giving up on this bone with Bette Davis just yet. I want to hash this thing out. I think you have a lot in common with a certain poster on imdb on the Davis board. I believe he feels that most of Davis' post-1942 output is unwatchable, thanks how "hammy" and "overblown" her performances became. He cites her artificial British accent as a sticking point, something that she didn't pick up until around the early to mid 40s. Granted, many actors of the time had affected dialects which seemed to be from neither here (U.S.) nor there (England). She was much more plain spoken early on. He finds her to be a much more refeshing actresses in her work from the 30s, which I tend to agree with though I like many of her later films and performances.
So......since your dislike for the actress reminds me of this poster I'm wondering if you have mostly seen latter day Davis movies. May I ask which ones you have seen? I would like to recommend some of her earlier stuff like THE GOLDEN ARROW and FRONT PAGE WOMAN. She's much more charming here and less grand dame-ish. I realize these are probably impossible to find where you live. I'd like to hear your opinion on anything Davis did from 1933-1937. However, if you have seen movies from this time and still feel the same you just plain don't like Bette Davis and I'll hush. ;D
P.S. Please do try and see OLD ACQUAINTANCE. As I recall Richard really liked it, me less so. It's still enjoyable. I have an inkling that Bette will get on your nerves.

Besides we still agree on Kate, Joan, Stanwyck, Vivien, etc. What's one actress among friends?

Ahh yes Shaun. I know of edward-miller.
He's one of the characters that I have... clashed with. I clash with lots of people though. I think I'm too much for most people. And I can be quite rude on forums. Except this, where I am pleasant(ish). But on the internet movie database there's just too many people thinking they're right, and others wrong.
I never claim to be right unless I am (ha!), but I almost always claim not to be wrong. How can opinions be wrong? Subjective statements of opinion can never be wrong?
And about that "I'd do every one of them" comment - wasn't it a joke?
OoOOooH my giddy gosh. You know what...JUST walked through my door!?
A strange dog! THAT I'VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE.
Our cat looks...somewhat alarmed. I better go remove this beast from my home...
