how unfair is it that that...............thing is going to see liza at the palace while we sit here and twiddle our thumbs? supremely, inexorably unfair. 'though that was a rhetorical question. no, judy, you're not the thing. relax. i'll give you a hint: "OMG I'M HER NUMERO UNO FAN!!!" life seems like such a mess presently. pardon. edit: i forgot to say have a wunduhful time!! it's bound to be one of the most epic performances of all time. say "hey" to liza maymay for us!! Report from "the thing": She was sensational. Liza is just Liza. Unique. Only one her. Best singer? Not by a long shot, even in her youth. Best dancer? Also, no. An entertainer you just love? Absolutely. AND....she was not some wilting voiceless thing that her recent TV appearances have lead us to believe she was. (Shocking realization: She is as old as Kate was when she did Coco...) She made much of how out of breath she was after a song or how tired. But it was all in fun. The 4 guys with her are fine and not only support her but give her a bit of a rest between numbers in the second act (they are only on with her in the second act; the second act is mostly a tribute to Kay Thompson and they are "supposed" to be he Williams Brothers). She looked great and in her signature numbers - Maybe This Time, Cabaret, And the World Goes Round, New York New York – she was more than fine. She can’t hold a note anymore – though she does still have some powerful lungs and uses them in a way that makes you THINK she can – and the high ones elude her. But who cares? She was just great. Looked great. Was smothered in love by the audience and all in all it was a great evening. She did an encore of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas with just Billy Stritch at the piano (the orchestra had left the stage by then – by the way she had them all come done from the bandstand to take a bow with her; classy) - that was lovely and moving. She talked about mamma and daddy and it was all great. There was a whole medley of songs sung by great entertainers at the Palace and she segued into it by saying that she remembered sitting in the audience at 5 years old and seeing her mother perform. The Kay Thompson act was really strong – particularly Clap Yo Hands and I Love a Violin. She told a touching story of when Judy died and Kay called from Rome just at that time and hadn’t known Judy had died. When Liza told her she said something like, She was an extraordinary woman and she did everything in her life that she wanted to do. Wish I could remember the rest of the comment cause it got a hand from the audience. Was a lotta love in that theatre tonight. Oh, another story she told was about when she went onstage for the first time at around 14. Her parents and Kay were in the audience. Parents were crying and they didn't have any tissue, so Kay passed them a powder puff. When they went backstage, Kay in her grand way said: Liza dahling. You were absolutely wonderful - and she gave her the powder puff, which Liza says she still has. So, I thought she was sensational – Somehow not the best at anything, but put it all together and there’s a star onstage. I MISS seeing STARS onstage....There are so many talented performers around, but no spark, no history, no drama in their presence. I don't know if it's the performers who've changed, or if it's just ME being nostalgic for the theatre of my younger days. Anyway, Liza is Liza. No cookie-cutter personality she. Only one. Thhhhat’s all, folks.

oh, my judy! in person reportage ... fabulous just a note from this fan of both mama judy and daughter liza ... She talked about mamma and daddy and it was all great. There was a whole medley of songs sung by great entertainers at the Palace and she segued into it by saying that she remembered sitting in the audience at 5 years old and seeing her mother perform. this very medley you refer to here is more than just a generic medley but .. as i've had it described to me prior to last night's opening ... is in fact a tweaked version of precisely the medley her mama judy sang AT the palace for her engagement there that ran from late 1951 into early 1952 (14 weeks or so) when judy garland re-opened the vaudeville gem what has become known as judy's "palace medly" .. so it would be precisely this medley (now slightly modified for liza may .. i'd expect the intro material perhaps? can't wait to hear it) that liza might have been describing watching her mom sing .. when she was five .. 'cause (doing the math) .. liza would indeed have been five during that judy palace stint. sitting there AT the palace watching her mama (then 29 years old) singing her heart out ... five year old liza may rapt, watching ... "i've played the State, the Capitol but people said 'Don't stop' ... until you've played the Palace you haven't played the top ...." ah, judy. can't wait to read more reviews. thanks!

Yes, it was Judy's medley from that show. With Liza's added intro. That's what made it so special.

One more thing. Though there was never any mistaking whose daughter she was - the map of Minnelli/Garland was on her face from birth - I don't think I've ever been more struck by the resemblance to her mother - I mean in movement, vibrato - even costume - as I was last night - perhaps it's a result of age. Hers and mine.
To me, she could never come close to Garland's talent, but the DNA is surely there.

Dreamer has thusly been deemed the Kate Compy Masterworker. Better moniker yet to come.
And thanks for the report about Liza May, chum. She says with a twinge of jealousy.

If I had to count on the fingers of one hand the most sensational theatrical evenings I've ever been privileged to experience - well, first, I'd need more than five fingers cause three of them would go to the three times I saw Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music.
