Yeah. I know. I had always suspected that they more or less broke up in the fifties, but it still hurts my soul. And makes me cry salty tears. I possibly would have gotten weepy 4 years ago, but I've grown-up since then. I do think that their's was a win/win relationship, but it was also lose/lose. Luckily for both of them it was more the former, but it would be ridiculous and unfair to say that they didn't have serious issues. It all makes sense why she flew the coop when she did. My poor control freak darling!
Wait... what did Kathy mean when she brought Gene up? Was that official confirmation that he did, in fact, cheat on her? Can I legit strongly dislike him now? Can I draw on his face? [Fine, so I haven't fully growed-up yet. Kathn'Spence make me regress.] I hope that Ingrid thing is nothing more than jealousy on Kate's part because when the hell would he and Ingrid have had the time to... do that? I can see some instances in Ingrid/Spencer's geographical timeline where it's possible, but.... Nooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Snivle.
And amen to The Aviator.
Also, I'm going to pretend she didn't imply Kate was a golddiggah that had the sexytimes for the five dolla. IGNORING.

Oh dear. Don't get mad; Get glad, son. I still like Spence tremendously. He makes me loooove him. I didn't want to do it, I didn't want to do it. I don't know if it was so much him taking her for granted as it was his needs were red-flags and much more demonstrative than her needs were. It's a two-sided coin, pal. Equally, they both demanded the same amount of support from each other, so what can you do? And I've had a few years to muddle over my opinion of him with what I know and he still comes out with a favorable impression in my book. Meh.

Is anyone else kinda peeved about this article? If what is attributed to Katharine Houghton she in fact did say, I feel she's being rather mean spirited. From start to finish!
That Kate only had affairs with men who could help her career? That it was only Spencer who could control her perversity and disagreeableness and without him she was just spoiled? That she wasted the last 20 years of her life?
Come on now, if you can't say something nice about someone than just shut up.
This to me smacks of Christina Crawford! I hate to think what she's going to say when she one day, inevitably, writes her tell all book.
We all know Kate could be selfish, she said so herself but this just goes too far.
Just venting,
Jim

I dont know. i mean when i read things about how he took advantage of her i get mas at him; and then when i read things she wrote about him and how she loved him and everything i love him again. and everytime i see one of his movies i cant help but love him and his amazingness. so its a love hate sorta thing.

It kind of contradicts everything doesn't it? Before Katharine Houghton was always speaking about how wonderful Kate was (of course she is!) and now she's backtracking and painting her in a not so flattering light. A few years back in the NY Times she was quite mean about Bob Hepburn and in the Seeds of Evil commentary I couldn't help but get an odd impression off her, she seemed haughty or something in it. Not saying that's her nature, just what vibe I felt off her in that.
If she is constantly correcting biographers and claiming she knows the true facts then why doesn't she set the record straight and write a book? Makes sense.

Yeah extremely, maybe some things are best left unsaid. Perhaps Cynthia should write a book or a memoir. Do you think Katharine Houghton is jealous? I don't know....how did she come across when you met her?

Hmm. good point. i wonder if she is.. maybe we'll never know. she might be though. i mean Cynthia and Kath spent a lot of time together. Cynthia had her wedding at Fenwick and everything. when i met her she was really sweet. she didnt really come off as snooty or anything. but i never knew she gave off that vibe to some people; if i ever meet her again (chances slim to none) ill have to see if she acts odd or anything. but i didnt get a bad vibe from her.

One part of the article that sat uneasy with me was the claim that once Spencer died, her friends dwindled away one by one because they didn't want to stand for that 'abuse.'
Is she implying that Kate was also rude to her etc???
Do you know what I mean?

If she was such hard work as a person then why did Kathy live with her? It seems ungrateful if you ask me. She has basically made a career out of this woman and lived with her and taken advantage that came with being Hepburn's niece and now she's throwing it all up in the air and saying this came about by being controlled and all of these advantages were given to her a by a mean spirited lady. So odd.
Do you think her change of attitude has come about because there's no Hepburn siblings left to defend Kate?
This is what she said about Bob Hepburn in regards to Barbara Leaming:
Hepburn's niece Katharine Houghton said, "When I asked my aunt, 'Did you have a great love affair with John Ford?' she said, 'Who said that? That's nonsense. You know perfectly well that Spencer was the great love of my life.' "
Houghton wonders why Leaming didn't interview family members other than Hepburn's brother Bob. "She didn't interview one person I would consider part of my aunt's inner circle," Houghton said, including several cousins the same age as Hep, who'll be 88 one month from today.
" 'Uncle Bob's never been the family historian," said Houghton of her eightysomething uncle. "He's not a person who's sophisticated in the ways of the world. She approached him by saying she was going to do a serious study of his parents' work in the social-hygiene movement. . . . I think of my poor Uncle Bob as being a goldfish in a pond with a shark."

what !? im slowly changing my view of Miss Houghton. I think your right though. she was being very selfish and ungrateful. maybe Kate Was just a way for Houghton to get a career started. this whole thing just seems very strange to me. and maybe she is saying all this now because there are no more Hepburn siblings left. who knows. but it is a coincidence.. i mean Bob died in what November? and now she comes out with this? She didnt mention anything bad about Kath in her Lecture when i saw her.. but i dont know. and why does she make Bob out to be some idiot who doesnt know anything...
