So I saw this video on Ann Nyberg's facebook and I found it cool because it gives you a little tour of the theater. And UMM can I say I REALLY WANT that black shirt with Kate's face on it?!?! I tried finding them on the site but there was nothing. I might call and see if there is anyway I can order one hah! doingitlocal.com/video/gallery/Hepburn-WMV

so looks like there will be a convenient weekend between our move out from apartment in philly and moving into our apartment in manhattan .. end of july .. and i'm thinking .. well of course let's try to plan a little trip to old saybrook. so, other than scouring the "kate" web site for hints about layout and places to stay in the area ... have people made the journey and stayed over? anyone have suggestions of places to stay in the area? places to wander? places to just bask in the kate-ness of the geography?

so looks like there will be a convenient weekend between our move out from apartment in philly and moving into our apartment in manhattan .. end of july .. and i'm thinking .. well of course let's try to plan a little trip to old saybrook. so, other than scouring the "kate" web site for hints about layout and places to stay in the area ... have people made the journey and stayed over? anyone have suggestions of places to stay in the area? places to wander? places to just bask in the kate-ness of the geography? I've stayed in OS many times over the years. Depends on what you want - chain hotel/motor inn, B&B, or luxury hotel -- OS has all of them. The Main St. is walkable and has various shops and restaurants that are interesting -one of Kate's favorites, Walt's Market is basically the same as it was all the years Kate shopped there. James' Pharmacy is also on Main St. -- Kate used to go there for ice cream -- but the use of the other half of the building has evolved markedly in the 30 years that I've been going there on trips to OS. A drive into Fenwick Borough is a must for any Kate fan as is getting a good view of the inner and outer lighthouses. If the OS Historical Museum is open -- it's not far from the theatre, it's an opportunity to see a rather interesting portrait of Kate which she gave to the the museum. If you decide to travel beyond OS, I'd suggest driving to Essex and Old Lyme and possibly doing the riverboat ride on the CT river from Essex upriver to the Goodspeed Opera House. I'd also suggest having a meal at the Griswold Inn in Essex if for no other reason than to spend some time in one of the oldest inns in the US. You could also do a tour of the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme. They have a great collection of American Expressionism paintings as Old Lyme was the home of American Expressionism. A book lover should drive to Madison -- south of OS -- and visit RJ Julia a terrific individually-owned bookstore. A drive to Ivoryton gives an opportunity to see the Ivoryton Playhouse. If you really have some time, drive up to Hartford which is about 35 miles north of OS and visit the Kate-related properties in that city. Her own book "Me" is the best guide to seeing "her" Hartford as many of the buildings which she mentions in the book still exist. Plus, you could further honor her memory by visiting her gravesite in Cedar Hill Cemetery. So -- it all kind of depends on what you want -- a few hours looking around the OS/Fenwick area or doing some side trips out of town.
