Bringing up Kate JIM GILCHRIST THOSE cheekbones, those legs, that stare ... Katharine Hepburn was an utterly new breed of actress and Hollywood never really knew what hit it, as actor Robert Lindsay recalls in Puttin' On More Style (Tuesday, Radio 2, 8:30pm). He and Hepburn, who died in 2003, aged 96, became friends, allowing him glimpses behind the intimidating hauteur.
Launching his second series on Hollywood icons, Lindsay recalls Hepburn dragging him away from a crowd asking for his autograph, complaining he'd kept her waiting long enough. "She dragged me to the car and said, 'Listen ... they've thanked you, you've thanked them, you've done your curtain call - now get on with your real life'."
The woman for whom the word "feisty" might have been coined projected a very different female image from the vamps and virgins who preceded her across the silver screen. The star who swept so magnificently through The African Queen, The Philadelphia Story and Bringing up Baby once said that "acting is the perfect idiot's profession".
"Sometimes icons actually live up to their reputations, and Katharine was certainly one of them,." says Lindsay.

wassup, Listened to the show last night. it was really enjoyayble. They had an interview that was done with Kagte around the time she was promoting "ME"..that ws pretty informative. Ofcourse they brought up the fact that Kate's stle was uniquely her own and not a manufactured ploy of the studio. Marlene Dietrich, another star who was well known for waering men's attire did more for a theatrical effect..on the other hand Kate wore what she wore because that was what people wore in New England Connecticut. Lots of cool commentarty from Bryan Forbes, George Cukor, Pandro Berman, and slew of others..reflecting Kate's life and style. Here is a link to the radio spot..I hope it works. p.s. Robert Lindsay is hillarious and narrates the piece very well. www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/mainframe.shtml?http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio2.shtml?listenpeace George

That radio show was almost as if it was saying, "Amber! TA-da! This is for you to squee!"
It was truly delightful, thanks for posting a link to it! You could tell Lindsay was/is totally adoring of her. HAHAH --> ".......silk panties....oh, wait, that's right, where were we? Katharine Hepburn." "I guess she could still smell him on his sweaters." <---THAT KILLED ME. I am now officially done on the inside.
And whoa, did I get teary-eyed towards the end. Damn these tributes having to play the OGP score!

ambe mushing cont...
so upon further thought, I've decided a song needs to be produced based solely on the noises that make their way through Kate's nose/mouth. I counted four snorts and a *meepheheeee* (after she says, "Good character....three men!") <--AWWW.
