I saw Dragon Seed on TCM, so I'd keep an eye out for it there. It's not the best 40s Kath movie--nor my favorite--but I do remember liking it more than I thought I would.

Had the luck finally to watch Dragon Seed some weeks ago - and I must say - the advertisement from MGM (to the right in the last pic) is really true

Watching Dragon Seed I totally lost track of time To me she was very convincing as a Chinese peasant. But as a die hard fan of Kate - and liking Pearl S Buck books hmmm - others might have another view - please do post your opinion.

Try to look past the makeup and see the performance. I know that's hard because her features are so distinct and are anything but Asian. But she gives a strong and ultimately very moving performance. Rest of the cast is good, too, yet she always seems to take the brunt of the criticism about the makeup. Try it, though, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Judy

Uhmm so I'm reviving this thread after 3 years, just because I feel the need to comment about every Kate movie I see. I loved this movie. I don't know why but it's one of my favorite Kate movies ever (but keep in mind, I've seen like 6). I think it was very creative of MGM to make her look Chinese, instead of getting a Chinese actor and in my opinion, Kate was absolutely STUNNING in her make up. (but then again, when isn't she stunning?) Kate aside, I though the plot was very well done. I haven't read the book, so I don't know how true it stayed to the plot in the book, but in the movie I thought it progressed very well and Kate and Turhan Bey's chemistry was great. So anyway, after three years since the last posting on this thread, I'm here to say that I love Dragon Seed.
