As y'all probably know, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences received a donation of documents about Kate and her career back in '04. I've just read an article about it and it mentioned a Katharine Hepburn film festival the Academy was holding. Suddenly, Last Summer was in the line-up and the article said: "Of special note is the presentation of “Suddenly, Last Summer,” which will be the premiere of a newly restored print from Sony with controversial shots that were cut from the original release now reinserted." What "controversial scenes?" Has this cut been released to the public? www.oscars.org/press/pressreleases/2004/04.09.07.html

Was it in this movie or Long Day's Journey into Night that Spencer was considered for a part? I just read it in the Kanin book. . . Either way, the movie would have been even better. I've never considered Suddenly one of my favorites but Long Day is probably Kate's best performance ... in my opinion.

Spencer was considered for the role of James Tyrone.
Catherine, you don't care for SLS? I think I'd rank it among my 10 favorite Kate movies. Which reminds me, we need a Top 10 thread...I like making lists. ;D

Eh, it wasn't my favorite -- of course I don't completely shun it because Katharine Hepburn is in it but really, if she wasn't in it, I probably wouldn't even have remembered it. Except maybe the cannibalism.

I thought SLS was fantastic. And I suppose it was rather controvertial at the time, with it's themes of canabalism and homosexuality. I wonder what those scenes were that were cut. Maybe we could be looking at a re-release with those scenes one day?
How wonderful it would have been if Spencer had played James Tyrone in LDJIN. It's such a shame he didn't. Though I do love the story of Katharine and Ralph Richardson at a party and he asked her to dance and afterwards told her she was very attractive. And she called him 'mad as a hatter'.
Love Gem

SLS wouldn't make my top 10 KH list, either. Woo for being different! I guess I like the more subdued side of Kath, ya'know when she ain't going all loca and threatening to have people lobotomized. Maybe, I dunno, there was something between Violet and her son. I'm sure you all have probably sensed something there, too. But he was a homosexual, so how could that have even happened? I got really confused to why Kate was acting the way she was. In love with him, I guess. *shrugs*

I like it because it was so different from anything Kate ever did. You could feel the tension between Violet and Catherine when Kate and Liz were on screen...it was awesome.

Kate was great (as always) in Violet's role, i like very much tenessee williams' books and i hope i could see Glass menagerie soon. I don't know if you have read the book, but kate plays very well violet venable, however elizabeth taylor, didn't convince me
