Don't get me wrong I LOVE Ginger and Lucy but does anyone else find it funny that Rogers and Ball have the pancake make-up and HUGE hair and Kate is just...well Kate?
I LOVE that!

I thought exactly the same thing. ;D Ginger Rogers looks so... well, like a movie star, I'd say, whereas Kate looks so much more glamorous I think even without the big hair and all the make-up. She just had such a strong personality, she could lighten up an entire room without even trying.

Great observation, charliesgirl!
That's one of the reasons I love Kate, she is not afraid of being herself.

Here's what I always found interesting about this documentary - at least as it concerns Hepburn and Rodgers. Hepburn - snooty, full-of-herself, hoity toity Hepburn - saw the studio as a family with everybody knowing everybody else - and names individuals - cutters, Loring, Steiner, etc - and recalls that everybody knew what was going on on everybody else's set - "at least I did," she says. And Rodgers - down-home, woman of the people - said that, oh, maybe she'd work with this crew person or that one on different movies, but that, no, it wasn't one big family environment.
Rodgers always seems so dissatisfied to me all the time. And defensive. Even when the spotlight's clearly on her and her not-inconsiderable talent. There's always this hint of desperation. It's an unappealing quality. It's not just the overdone nature of her appearance. It's the...Oh, I don't know...Maybe it's having the old boy - Oscar - in the background. Giving her the benefit of the doubt, the idea probably came from the people making the documentary. But I'm betting she was glad to oblige.
And, really, she had so much talent in her pocket. She could do what not many could. Why she always seemed so defensive about it, as if she had to PROVE something else - to me - is a mystery.
Could you ever imagine Hepburn sitting with her Oscars in the background? I mean, she was nothing if not a look-at-me, look-at-me individual. But she seemed to want people to look at more than an out of focus statue in the background. And she possessed a self-effacing quality - at least in interviews - that Rodgers lacks.
Hepburn has that in common with (I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE) Lucille. Though she and Rodgers could be compared in terms of how they were all got up - the hair, makeup, jewelry, etc - there's a world of difference between Lucy's interview and Ginger's. She was - IMO - so sharp and on the ball (pun intended) in her interview - didn't need to be sitting on top of a pile of her laurels to make sure you knew how powerful a person in the industry she'd become. There was nothing that smacked of desperation about her.
But getting back to my original thought, I do love how their comments about the studio - Kate's and Ginger's - turns their accepted images - images accepted by people who buy into the common wisdom - on their ear.
IMO.

Judy, I wish I could string words together like you do. I guess I first noticed something stand offish with Ginger when I started reading her book. Her wording was....annyoing? She was a VERY talented woman, way more that anyone in the industry ever gave her credit for, IMO. For me it seems she is trying desperately to rewrite history. Her talking about her days with Fred, "We were a team, I was there." I guess, if I put myself in her shoes I would be bitter also, she worked just as hard as Fred and in all her other endevors but what is she really remembered for? That girl that Fred Astaire danced with. She is always defensive. This is the ONLY interview I've ever seen of Ginger and to my knowledge the only filmed interview she ever gave. (anyone know of any others?) A few minutes into her interview I just thought, wow I would NOT want to be the guy interviewing her. She looked like she was ready to eat him. I loved Kate talking so frankly. I just...gah she is just amazing. And Ball, why was there not MORE. Just that little snippet.

Terrific analysis as usual, Judy. I never really noticed the "desperation" you describe- but now that you mention it- BAM- there it is. That's what always seemed "off". It's an excellent documentary...

I've said this before and I say it again here. I think Rodgers was extremely talented. And I think that the industry gave her plenty of credit. She just made a point of pointing that out all the time - in subtle ways maybe - and maybe my own view has colored some of the things she's said/written - but that very thing is what makes me feel that hint of desperation. I don't necessarily think that people only look at her as that girl who danced with Astaire. But the fact is, and she couldn't possibly deny this, Astaire was the driving/creative force in that partnership - and the unseen Hermes Pan. Does that mean that she was just window dressing? Absolutely not. After all, Astaire danced with many partners but it is their partnership that defines elegance and grace - and a kind of sharp, 30's wit - on screen. Just as Tracy and Hepburn define romantic chemistry for many. So of course she was a major factor in that team's chemistry. A different type of personality would just accept that and revel in it as much as her fans do. I think they both took offense at Kate's comment about Fred giving her class and Ginger giving him sexual appeal. And I can understand it, I guess. But, really, Kate wasn't trying to offend them. She had zeroed in on something essential that made them work as a team. (She was equally insightful about her own screen partnership with Tracy). She was spot on in describing what they each gave to the other as screen performers. Apart from him, Rodgers was a good actress and a stellar comic actress. And she made up half of one of the screen's greatest partnerships. And she had a long and successful career. This doesn't seem to have satisfied her. At least that's the feeling I've always had. But I enjoy many of her movies and much of the time, she's the reason why.
