The Oscars were fun this year, a lot of good winners. But I just have to say- tonight, after 82 years, it is amazing that a woman, Kathryn Bigelow, finally won. (And a richly deserved award at that.) Another Katharine would have approved And gottamatch- Barbra was a very touching presenter. We were right about Director.

Yes - enjoyed it too. Even if I had to watch it in the night It was a delight to see a woman director win. But - and nothing against Kathryn Bigelow (just the subject) - would have wished that Babs would have won for Yentl back in 1984. Loved that film - what do I say - love it - and if possible even more it's music

overall the broadcast oddly without class except for individual moments .... except for the last awards. and at that point ... my impressions in part redeemed. the panel of people providing comments about the best actor and best actress nominees is a GREAT innovation (begun last year) .. really makes it 'family' and recognizes the honor of being nominated ... all that stuff.
i liked both bridges' and bullock's speeches quite a bit
great thrill to see streisand present the director oscar to bigelow ... director to director. and yes women. fabulous.
and the orchestra playing bigelow off to helen reddy's 'i am woman' was so incredibly lame i wanted to scream.
so .... a story won over a spashy cartoon. and a lot of oscars were spread around. good going.

Agree with you on the "I am Woman" Martha. I'm assuming a male picked that one!
I was at my uni's public screening of it- full of film snobs- and they booed Sandra Bullock! It was awful. Disagree with her win all you like, but it's not her fault she won.
Semi-connected to the Bigelow thing...how do you think KH would have been as a director? I really think the tower scene in Mary of Scotland stands out from the rest. She certainly had potential. And then there was that project with I. Selznick that never got off the ground. Such a shame we never got to see her direct. I bet it would have changed her acting...made it deeper perhaps.

Wasn't the Bigelow win fantastic. What a treat Barbra and Bigelow sharing that moment. It's about time.
Dreamer of course I agree about Yentl. What a brilliant overlooked directorial debut, or should I say, directorial job, period. Brilliant movie, photography, costumes, MUSIC, direction, production, really a shame it was snobbed by the academy. But I'm so relieved a woman FINALLY got it.
CFK, I would have been desgraced with my peers if that had happened to me. I just started Uni (2 weeks ago, sorry for being absent folks, getting used to the workload lol) and I'm in a film club, havent attended any meetings yet, but those film fans are so hardcore it doesn't surprise me somehow. They're always into the big sci-fi / Avator type films.. not really the 'films with heart' which they seem to think isn't Oscar nod worthy by any means.
I haven't seen The Blind Side yet but hope I can see it before it stops playing at the movies. I can't wait to see it, Bullock looks fantastic in the role, heck, even the trailer makes people in the cinema cry!
All in all, I think they went backwards with their presentation of the show this year. Loved the first Baldwin Martin skit and the rest was downhill for me. At least last year they tried to incorporate song and dance to make it a bit livlier! I am thinking of the Oscars aren't I? It was very animated and themed last year, wasn't it? A throw back to the 1980s.
Anywhoo, all in all Bigelow was the highlight for most and myself included. Didn't notice the song but am rolling my eyes even thinking about it!
