And the Oscar goes to....
Yes, they've given Bacall a lifetime achievement Oscar. The ceremony took place this weekend and they will apparently show clips of her acceptance and that of the others (Roger Corman and Gordon Willis) during this year's televised awards.
Some of the news reports quote her - feisty as ever - saying how exciting it will be when she gets home to find she has a two-legged man in her apartment.
Kirk Douglas presented her award and told about their friendship going back 60 years, how she got her uncle to give her poor, struggling actor friend (Douglas) his overcoat and how to pay her back he (Douglas) "tried to seduce her."
And when she accepted she talked about "the love of my life" Bogart, as well as favorite leading men like Douglas, Gregory Peck and Henry Fonda.
From some of the news photos - if you Google her you'll see them - her three children were in attendance and she looked wonderful.

Isn't it wonderful? I'm kind of annoyed that this was the year they took the Honoraries out of the main ceremony, but hey, she got the recognition, and she looks great at 85 (and has clearly lost none of her marbles). Steve and Leslie look great too. Lovely speech, witty, poignant. I've always thought she was terribly underrated as an actress. Thanks for the post.
I really wish there had been a Bogart/Bacall/Hepburn/Tracy movie.

I really wish there had been a Bogart/Bacall/Hepburn/Tracy movie. You know, much as I would have liked to have seen this presented live on the show, I actually think it was good that they did it this way. In one of the articles about it, Norman Jewison said how relaxed and fun the atmosphere was, not having it televised. And I think it shows in that clip. She looked relaxed, much more so than I think she would have been if she had had to accept it live. And she got more time than she would have had it been live on the show. So all in all, I'm glad they did it this way. Sam Robards was there with his wife, too. He's in the background of one of the photos....By the way, when she mentioned her two Bogart children, they cut to a woman at a table. For those of you who do not know, that is not Leslie Bogart. But she was there, along with Stephen Bogart and his wife. They are in a number of photos of the event at the event.

Oh okay thanks for pointing that out. I thought I saw Sam.
Also, her dress was gorgeous! Very elegant and old-Hollywoodish.

I loved Anjelica Huston's introduction - though I found it odd that she referred to her as Lauren throughout. Well, I guess that's as it should be. That's her movie star name and this was a movie star moment.

Oh. My. God.
That was glorious. I'm all emotional. Betty Joan Perske has single-handedly imparted me with a sense of good will towards my fellow man for the rest of the day. Or the next two hours. Kate may show up in a garbage can with her hair coiffed into a doorknob and it'll all go to hell. We'll see.
She looked marvelous and delighted and a million other adjectives that needn't be listed. What a perfect speech, too! Thank the Oscar gods that this wasn't a televised cast---I don't think I could've handled another moment such as the last time she was asked to appear on stage during the broadcasted ceremony. Leave her alone, she's just a nervous little thing!
CONGRATS ON THE NAKED GOLDEN MAN, LADY!!! (I hope you live forever.)

They completely screwed her up that last time - loony teleprompter - and it made her appear a bit slow and addled. She's anything but that. She may move slower nowadays - but she's sharp as a tack.

Well I know that and you know that, but the media sure as hell played it to the hilt. Yet, they didn't think to mention how EVERYONE that night got shafted by the Kodak's teleprompter. Things like that set my teeth on edge .
No matter. She's got one now, so we can start campaigning for Reenie O'Hara's.

But it was better copy to paint her as a fool - getting a bit of their own back, probably. She doesn't exactly suffer them gladly. And I've seen her in situations where she was absolutely within her rights to shoot them The Look. Not the To Have and Have Not look, but the one she developed for fans who run up and put their arms around her for a picture without asking and generally anyone else in whose presence she'd rather not be. Scary.

YAY for Betty's Oscar! F I N A L L Y! As soon as I got the link I got mum in here to watch it too because not only does she love Betty too but we were just watching a cute movie called "All I Want for Christmas" (literally, just now before I read this post) and my mum was like 'I cannot believe how beautiful Lauren Bacall always is, at any age' and I was like "I KNOW I KNOW".. I cannot believe she didn't win for her Oscar nomination for The Mirror Has Two Faces in which she played Barbra's mother. She OWNED that role. You could not imagine anyone else in the world playing that part. I don't even know who that Oscar went to, but I find it hard to believe anyone in that category could have beat her. Pure crime.
Anywhoo GO BETTY! And how funny is she 'a man at last' or whatever she says hahaa.. she always had a great sense of humour. I assume in private she has a dry sense of humour. She's very intelligent.
Fantastic!
