This is my face, RE: article: Well, none of this was particularly too shocking, apart from some of that hearsay on the Tracys' early married [sex] life. I'm more perturbed by those comments on the bottom; if this is the kind of response to Tracy and Hepburn we are to expect after the book's release, then I hope everybody's prepared for Round 7,849 in 'T&H v. The Intarwib'. Just like ol' times... ETA: The author of this piece also helped to co-write another, titled, "What every girl wants: a charming hero, trendy shoes and lots of glitz." ............so. (The image of Kate on the prowl with a shotgun, though. What.)

I just saw this article and to me it looks like a very basic, very superficial overview of the ST/KH relationship and not like an excerpt from the book, at least I hope so. The comments to the article therefore don't surprise me, though I admit I rolled my eyes about 79 times reading them So Evelien, you will get your book today, how exciting ;D

Well, you'll all be very interested to know that Kate once asked a doctor if he could give Spencer injections to lower his libido. (And before you ask: no, I didn't search for fragments like these in the book, I just read it while I was browsing through the book Anyway, I've read some fragments here and there and it looks really interesting, there's quite a lot in there about Kate. Of course I haven't read enough yet to tell much more. There aren't any new Kate-related pictures, but there are a lot of pictures of Spencer that I hadn't seen before. Oh, and the last chapter of the book is dedicated to biographies about Kate and the author gives us a few pages of reasons why William Mann's book is... garbage (my word choice).

Gee, then I wonder if that filthy rumor about Laura's NYC flat and the glass figurine is true, after all! (No, it isn't.) BRB, leaving the Internet until I receive my copy. And I read about the "Katharine Hepburn Biographies" chapter; I was a happy little fangirl.

Yeah, I'm considering this thread "spoiler" until the book is done. (Can you have spoilers for biographies? I guess so.) Glad to see that he gives Mann the bashing he deserves, though.

Well, one thing about Spencer Tracy...
...during the first year of their marriage, he and Louise were involved with a theatre company in Manitoba.
He spent the winter in Winnipeg.
In Winnipeg.
Spencer Tracy was a brave, brave soul.

Coolstory,bro.com.
Kidding, of course.
Confession: I skipped ahead to '41; the reader's gravest sin, I know. If I'm up all night flipping through this tome, may some kindhearted person poke me in the morning and remind me to shower/go about living?
NO SHAME.
Happy reading, everybody!!

Another thing about Spencer Tracy....
He sure gave crappy Christmas presents. "Here's a nice, crisp 5 dolla bill, Kate. Catch on?"
Okay, okay. Be gone, Amber.
ETA: One final thing. Would it not have been an ingenious cover design if Curtis had selected to use BOTH of the Irving Penn shots? The "trapped" image on the front, and then the grinning image on the back? It'dve been less one-dimensional, to boot. And it would have been a fairer representation of this very complicated man who also loved to/making others laugh.
Don't get me wrong; I love the cover. (GET IT? BECAUSE HE WAS TRAPPED IN REAL LIFE!?) It draws the casual browser to the shelf, no doubt. Only...
Help.

I admit here first that I received the book yesterday and flipped immediately to the Hepburn biographies appendix. Bless this writer. Assembled fans and friends, I do believe everyone here will feel affirmed. This is my introduction to the the work of this particular biographer and ... with this short appendix piece analyzing (and appropriately dissecting, with a bit of wit to boot) the snarky trash in Kate's name from the past .... well, i cannot WAIT to get into the real meat of the biography.
My only criticism so far -- the book is so hefty I won't be inspired to travel with it ...
Back to work ... then to the biography. Yea.

Golly this book is a slow slog in the early going ... and I've been saving it to read before going to sleep (bad on all counts .... big book in bed and i'm tried ) ... but let me just say that I've GREATLY enjoyed the section on Grand Rapids Michigan (my birth place) and early locale of Spencer stage career appearances. I remembered as a child hearing of Spence's appearance in town way back when ... now, well, truth. yea.

Excuse me, but it was TEN nice crisp 50 dolla bills, if I remember correctly!!! Not much of a difference, I agree it was pretty crappy! I am proud to say I resisted the temptation to start reading from the middle, that is from 1941 onwards ;D. I am currently on page 670. I hope after you all read it we can comment it here together.

Oh, noes. I was actually alluding to Desk Set back there, friend. "Wait, a second... uh, do you have a nice, crisp five dollar bill? Yah, well add that to it. Catch on?" --Bunny Watson, on outsmarting the Legal Department at Christmas ETA: I was mostly kidding when I said that about Spencer's not-so-Secret Santa-ing, by the way. A gift is a gift, and on top of that ludicrous amount of money, he also gave her things that, to my mind, were very much "her," so... Still, I'd have liked to have seen Kate's face, upon opening up such a large sum of cash: "Uh, thank you, dahling!" And may I congratulate you on being a far more noble reader than I? You possess the strength of ten of me. Until then, I'll just be over here...
